Just a heads up for anyone thinking about going over the kaituna cut. This is a photo taken just now at low tide and there looks to be a sand bar forming on the maketu side of the channel.

We were going to go out for a snapper fish this morning but a bit of wind and swell convinced us to change our plan. Seeking a bit of shelter we went out in the harbour to flick a bait around. We went out with zero expectations.

We got out and started softbaiting with no results. We spotted a kahawai work up and managed to get 1 decent KY before anchoring up. Within 10 minutes we had landed a rat kingie and soon after Tyler landed a very nice fish for the harbour that would’ve been 2.5kgs. We managed to get 6 snapper, 1 Trevally and a kahawai before we headed for home. Safe to say we were very surprised with our results especially as we’d only fished for a little over 2 hours at the top of the incoming tide. Smile

We were fishing in the Te Puna channel with wind and tide together. The results favoured the harbour rig by far. We talked to some guys at the ramp who were fishing alongside us. They seemed to be fishing with flasher rigs and had only caught undersized snapper.

Hi Coastbusters,
We were fishing at 11am till 1pm so top of the incoming tide.
The Harbour rig is basically a running sinker rig - only what we do is we hold the sinker and feed the mainline through the sinker for about 30 metres then drop the sinker. The sinker weight should be the smallest required to hit the bottom but not light enough to roll the whole way back to the swivel. We were using 4kg mainline and a 6/0 recurve on a 2m 20lb trace.

Good wee sesh up Omok ways today,
couple of hours before high.38 to 54mm released a few 35's.
Skippy and harbour rig done the damage.

Chased the harbour Kingis yesterday to no avail.
Nothing seen around the markers or on the sounder in the entrance.

Your boat should be painted for all snapper to see: "Warning: Kitno may be dangerous to your health". Nice work, mate. you obviously have the Tauranga shallows mastered.

Good work Coochdog, if anyone's not catching snapper in the harbour at the moment, they probably never will. Almost every bait lately has been getting hit. I've tagged quite a few lately, so if one of these gets recaught, please measure and record the tag number and phone the cell number on the tag. It's up to you if you want to keep the fish or not.

Cheers Kitno,Have signed up with the tagging programe.

Be interesting to know how far the BOP snaps migrate over winter, spring.Spawning in the bay or the Gulf?

Two 49s yesterday late arvo and a heap of small ones,Wind kept us off the usual spots.

Would of been a good night once the wind dropped but ran out of bait!
