Hi there, is it normally over high tide that you would target them?

Hi man,
Yeah just because its so shallow around tamaki drive that you need the high tide for the squid to feel comfortable to come that close to shore.
so we like to fish 2 hours either side of high tide.

Is the high tide thing purely for access to deeper water? if say I had access to deep water spot at low tide is it worth it?

yeah bro the high is just for the fact its so shallow around there!

Also they not the strongest swimmers so as the tide weakens is also helpful

I'm completely new to catching squid but thought i'd get out and give it a go, went out saturday night and got nothing, wasn't very prepared though. Did a bit of research this morning and went out again tonight and caught 4 in an hour and lost another 3 or 4 as I was still figuring out a technique haha. Pulled a couple of them up only to have them let go of the jig at the surface and swim away. Caught some good sized ones so I was told

Good work Coxie! Not a bad result for being new to squid fishing. Where did you end up going?

Hey Coxie, next time one drops off drop the jig back in front of it and 9 out of 10 times it'll have another go. Squid are really thick. I've seen one take a jig in a rockpool it got stuck in after falling off. Likewise on the retrieve if it drops off just stop winding and it'll have another go.
