A good friend of mine showed me how to do this squid thing around August last year in Auckland. So its been playing on my mind on where to start for the Tauranga/Whangamata area. Anyway we had an over night trip to Motiti on Saturday. Anchored in 15m with around 10 knots of breeze. No berley or underwater lights. Just the cabin lights which were slight breaching around 3m of water out back of boat. around 10 flicks and we came up trumps with 2 Squid.

Will def be trying around the Whangamata area soon. Good fun these dam things.

The squid fishing has been awesome this winter. the size is getting better and better every week. The new Yo-Zuri Rattle squid jigs are the Killer for the big squids.
The orange and gold under seems to be the colour this week.

THAT is a nice 'fish'. I fished there a billion times as a kid and no one ever caught a squid. I guess the fishery is just getting better! Wink

What stage of tide are you fishing for squid, incoming, out going or either side of high or anytime
Does it fish better leading up to the full or other way around
What puts the squid off the bite, weather wise

Generally I found success in the outgoing tide within 2 hours from high tide in the evenings with calm weather conditions, not to mention quite clear water.

I have tried fishing during daytime in windy and wavy conditions but to no avail thus far despite my jig sinking to the bottom.

The size of the squid is getting better and better day by day.
lately lost of rain made the water a bit coloured. so the solid body and bright colour jigs works better at mission bay

Yes they certainly have arrived. Been fishing ok for the last month. Went out last night and grabbed some just all along the weed beds. Smaller size jig helps a lot. 1.8 yama****a naory
