Ok, while I'm not a newbie to fishing, but I am to Live baiting....

Saw a post where people were live bating using jigging gear with braid. This was on an Epic trip.

So, this seems to go against my understanding as mono seems to be the line of choice.

So how do you this?
Where would you put a sinker; on the braid? (would that not wear through the line?)
Would you still use a swivel?
I have been told that live baiting with braid that the line can get into a mess.

BTW only planning to live bait in the Gulf, the channels seem to have a lot of kingi's hanging around at the moment.

Cheers

Ok now that IS a tricky one for me because I am not a big fish specialist Cool. Personally I wouldn't have a sinker running on braid if targeting big fish. My choice would be 37kg braid to swivel, swivel to  mono ( a little lighter than the braid and trace because you dont want a fish towing around a sinker for a death sentence) & swivel between heavy mono (1metre or so) and 80 to 120lb trace. Have the sinker between the two swivels and cushion it with a soft bead either side. Alternatively fish it on the surface doing away with the sinker. Any one else feel free to offer your advice.

Stick to the standard braid to shock leader tied with Bimini/yucutan knot and shock leader tied to swivel and trace.  Thread the sinker thru the shock leader before tieing to the swivel but drill out the sinker first so that if the main line breaks the knots will still pass thru the sinker and not drown the fish.
The alternative is to tie the sinker to the top eye of the swivel with a very light trace, eg 2kg, so that it can break off easily.
I waste most of my money on fishing tackle. The rest I invest in women and booze.

depending  if you are rock fishing , surfcasting or boat  fishing, if rock fishing dont bother with sinker, actually any  style dont bother.re braid i use braid with all styles and use at least 20m of heavy mono trace. With  surf casting you can get the swivels for live baiting fom the shore(non return clips i think) which are great for getting kahawai out through the surf.Off the boat or kayak or rocks i just hook up the livie with a balloon ,Braid is great for extra strength and you know you can give it a bit more grunt.Make sure you have at least 80lb leader for the livie, dont attach it to the braid.
I use 50lb cortland blackspot on my tld25, 10lb on my softbait , and i cheat with my shimano long cast big bait runner with 50lb cortland(just in case a big ray , kingie or bronzie pops up)
If im wrong im sure some one will comment.Wink

You could always tie a double via a bimini twist in the braid.....attach a 5 or 6 metre leader of mono or flouro, then a swivel with a five  ounce ball sinker over the top, then a 2 metre trace of 100 pound flouro and youd be away....thats what i would do but i prefer to do all that but with mono.Dont like braid for live baiting....you can feel everything and so can they!

for deep water fishing i use 37kg braid with a windon leader,on the end a ball bearing swivel  and a egg sinker. The trace is 3 mtrs of 130pd bm hard trace ,this gives about 10mtrs of mono on the end of the braid.Hooking the fish you have to be a bit gentler, when you get a bite let the fish run a few mtrs then slowly push drag to strike and lift rod loading it up,if you hit the fish hard with an agressive strike you will pull the hook due to no line stretch..it took a while to get used to but its working better for me personally than mono
