A bit bigger than that Bob, 50 - 55 cm. Just measured against my hand. That fish was released as it looked good to go (yes, I know, doesn't mean anything). Got a feed as well, but a lot of hunting around for the fish. I"m thinking tomorrow evening if you're keen? There is a weather window.

Lovely winter fish. Where did you take that one, over the sand clearly? Do you fish in the harbour mostly or do you fish up and down the sandy coast, or shoot out to the Islands?

Hi FF, yes over sand somewhere. Honestly can't remember where, but around 30 metres just out the harbour. I rarely fish in the harbour, but my natural habitat is Bream Bay to the Old Woman to the Hen & Chicks Smile

Just somewhere we are considering buying into when the economy goes south way it should. With NZ borrowing 100s of billions in 2008 which avoided our real estate dipping 30%, typically kiwis saw that as a sign we should borrow 100s billions more, meanwhile the US finding a new way to do over the economy, watch, the china hustle if you have netflix, it might be on youtube. either way the slight down turn imo could be the start of something most kiwis thought impossible. we do tend to not watch the financial news and stick out heads in the sand a bit.

anyway i think Whangarei is the way forward for Auck. Not fast train to Taurunga. We need trains to the north shore, and like they wanted satelitle cities to Sydney via train, ie parra, penrith, Newcastle, Wollongong etc, i think Whangarei is the obvious choice for investment in both business and life style (real estate).I think an extension via high speed with intermittent stops is the right way forward. Would truely open the option of living north of Auckland.

We are looking at either Whangarei heads or Tutukaka/Matapouri.

Back to your fishing, Ive never fished inside the Harbour and not sure if its too shallow to harbour a good size of fish? I use to fish Marsden Pt for Kingi 30 years ago, so I dont see why edibles arent inside the harbour?

Id likely be looking at a 22-27ft centre cabin for overnighting at both the chicks and poor knights, despite the reserve the Mrs loves diving out there and I take my free diving gear.

I imagine that whole bream bay sandy area holds fish.

Like New Plymouth, Whangarei has really done itself up in recent years, with the marina walk way etc. There are even IT jobs. I just see it getting better and better.

We have also been considering, Keri Keri and New Plymouth. But for mew Whangarei is the next natural progression post economic apocalypse.

Lots of discussion there! I'll stick to the fishing bit. There are heaps of fish in the harbour, despite the intense recreational fishing pressure. Snapper are more prevalent in the harbour over the summer months (spawning), but kingies are kahawai are always there. The only reasons I don't fish in the harbour are too much boat traffic and I don't want to look at that pigging ugly oil refinery while I'm fishing.

Plenty of good fish in the harbour depending on time of year and great shallow water fishing. Take time to learn but well worth the effort. More than few people happy to assist.

Went and had a cast off Manganese Pt today for something different.

Lost a fk'n big ray, took about 3-400 metres was fun, managed to turn it and was heading toward the shore but it cut me off on some rocks.Ouch

And then I got mobbed by a pack of kingies chasing my softbait they were about 20-25lb was bloody exciting. I couldn't get a popper tied on fast enough... but they had moved on...Cry

Hi All, is there much happening nearer the mouth of the harbour lately? I'm hoping to get out Sunday morning. Cheers

I'm catching them inconsistently on jigs in around 40 metres over sand.

Used to get them in the main channel by snake bank, haven't been there for a while though

pretty hard to go past Black magic Tarakihi rigs and salted bonito cubes. Small Gulp jugging grubs on a ledger rig are also good . Back when you could get the small 1inch Gulp crabs they were awesome.

Small pink flasher rig, smallish baits with burley just a meter or two off the bottom has been my go to gurnard method in other areas if over sand.

The harbour gets pretty dead this time of year, especially when we get big runs of fresh water coming through. Your best bet for a gurnard would be outside the harbour in a line halfway between peach cove and the fairway bouy. the rigs previously suggested will work fine. Just the weather conditions being the issue.

went out sat morning braved the cold going down the harbour. plenty of boats heading out at 6am.  good forecast seems to get everyone out of bed. fished the 40-50mt mark and got a nice feed of pannies. 1 nice fish at 600. overall was slow going but the conditions were great. back home before 11am

Well done Bob. I was out on a friend’s boat yesterday. I saw three skis out there, but not you. We were out a little later in the day I think.

Struggled to find fish, same as trip before. Probably because my lazy boatie mates can’t make it to the boat ramp before 10am 😀
