Just one......

Wow would be a tough call for me between the importance of good knots vs remembering to take your patience with you when ya go fishing.

Never forget the Steinies.

Actually it would be - keep trying new things whether it's tackle, baits, techniques, locations.
Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

Make sure you check your terminal tackle after catching a fish..  that burr on the nylon trace or main  line or that blunted hook may lose you the moocher you have always been wanting...

If your not catching fish try something new or change your game plan and learn to target the target species.

I've never been good a following the rules sorry Mr. Dixon

1) read the New Zealand Fishing News - what do I win?

2) Be prepared - spend some before going fishing pre-tieing as many traces/rigs as you think you might need and do half again - also make a mental map of how you have packed your tackle receptacle...so in the middle of a hot bite you know exactly where to retrieve "that" critical item - saves time in the heat of the moment and gets you back fishing again quickly after a foul up.

3) Fish where the fish are

pay attention to your line. you'll learn to tell whats biting and how to best get the fish hooked especially when using braid. Also most tangles are caused by an unattended line

keep the rod bent when playin a fish ! why? because no bend means slack line and the fish has a good chance of  spitting or shaking the hook

Ask the right people for advice. This place is a good start. Charter skippers are the bee's knees too. Good fisherman love talking shop so LISTEN, and maybe buy then a beer while you suck the knowledge out of their head.

" Tight Lines "  A very old saying but one of the most important aspects of fishing and one that a newbie to fishing should have ingrained into their head as without a constant line pressure on the fish there is a better than even chance that the fish will be lost :)

HAVE FUN!!! ... enjoy your days out on the water/rocks/beach
follow the basics and do them well bait/hooks/lines/knots/technic's, dont try to over complicate things to early (but yes do try new things when you want to, even if others say it wont work ... theres only one way to find out for yourself, and hey it mite even work)

keep a close watch of weather, tide, temp, swell and seasonal (ie crabs changing shells, whitebait running, fish spawning etc) patterns, read/listen to as many fishing reports as you can paying attention to times, dates, locations, methods and take good notice of how your own fishing trips go. Think carefully about why some trips were frantic and others were slow, never just shrug your shoulders and pin it all on luck.

fresh bait always works the best  and keep a good stock of sabakis on hand for piper, pillies etc. A chilly bin with 1 or 2 frozen coke bottles of water is good for keeping bait and fish fresh and you can drink the water as it defrosts if on the rocks or beach. And never dispair if you dont catch anything cos you wont be the only one .Last of all if you dont have a line in the water you cant catch fish!!

It depends on the style of fishing. It's also so complex that one tip is not enough, thinking back to my many unsucessfull trips while learning I would add:

- burley
- safety
- remote locations
