With very little wind the algae rises to the surface. This Blue/Green algae, found in Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti and many others, is toxic and can be absorbed by the skin and/or breathed in. The toxin produced by the algae can make existing allergies worse or even create allergies and can affect the liver. It has also been known to cause headaches and a feeling of nausea in some people.
It is overcast at the moment (5.15pm) and the forecast rain is very close. There is heavy rain forecast for Rotorua on Saturday as well. If it eventuates, then the Ngongotaha, Waiteti and Utuhina rivers should have reasonable runs of fish through them. The Ngongotaha River had a good run of browns up it with the last lot of rain there could well be even more if this heavy rain turns up. There may even be an early run of fish into the Te Wairoa Stream at Lake Tarawera.
