Have leave of absence from wife and kids for the day on friday so gonna redeem all accumulated brownie points. Not sure where to launch from at this stage but will accept any pearls of wisdom on offer...sounds like east coast beaches have been a bit slow lately but might look at Taka again and just berley up hard.

Skunked at Taka today, lots undersize snaps plus Jac Mac's in the berley trail which were a pain in the arse not to mention a penguin giving them a hurry up. Kingies chasing piper like crazy at the St Leonards green marker, great to see but I was a bit slow on the plastics. Lots of diving gannets around but no sooner to you paddle over to them they bugga off. Too windy out wide but quite sheltered in under the cliffs, change of light might be worth a go but to sum up the day ...hard yaka at the taka!

I have almost forgotten what it is like to catch a fish...Cry.

Went out nice and early this morning off castors bay... Softbaiting again and skunked again!  Talked to the few guys in boats around me.. They were using squid and while they were not catching large or large numbers of fish they were at least catching something! Normal baits for me next time...

Hmm I'm with you on the softbait PE, it's just not happening for me either, didn't really want to end up with a smelly yak but I don't think there is much choice...

I might join the Hibiscus club guys Sunday morning off Narrowneck for one last softbait attempt...

You know I have tried pretty much everything, different weight jig heads, different styles, different colours, slow retrieves, fast retrieves, different times of the day, different depths, close to shore, far from shore,  casting into the rocks etc etc... You name I have tried it over the last couple of weeks and I have had barely a measly bite!

I think you have the right idea MD, I also need to go out with some others to get my faith in soft baits back....

Fishing blind but not for long! I am going to put a sounder on in the next couple of weeks.

I saw a guy pull in a couple of snapper today in a tinny as I drifted by him.. So I know they are there! Did that drift three times, no luck..

Yep I've got my sounder installed - Navman 4500 - but to be honest I've never caught a fish under my kayak, always 10m off to the side or front...

I have fished out of a stink boat for the last 5 years, always driving out to Tiri or the Noises, just not used to fishing in close I think, I just need to get out more...

MD - If you're drifting off the bays, just try dropping a spare line with an SP down so it bounces along on the bottom about 20m behind you - The action of the yak will do the rest.  You can then actively fish the main SP rod casting ahead of you.

This is how I got into SPs, when I was pulling in more fish on the 'ignored' line than the smellybait I was using.

I read an article in Fishing news by Stephen Tapp about trolling sp's while heading out to or between fishing spots, and while I didn't catch anything on it the other day I had two bites. Just did the slow  "s" shaped thing while paddling, which drops it down then makes it scoot away.  My problem was not getting around to strike in time once the ratchet went off - would take a run then drop it (and no it wasn't the bottom, unless the bottom has dentures). I think you have to put the drag up quite hard to sink the hook, especially when it takes time to drop the paddle, turn around and then strike. No luck on stationary plastics though, unless you count my eel and starfish!

Ambo dont troll with ratchet on in freespool, you're asking for the mother of all birdsnests if using free spool reels. Troll with a moderate to light drag setting, you dont need to strike fish hook themselves. You catch heaps of kahawai trolling. I have also caught snapper trolling SPs around work ups and even a trevally trolling around a harbour. Paddle tails work really well. If you have a scotty rod holder or similar in front of you keep your rod in there so you can keep an eye on it. reaching around behind you to grab a rod can destabilise the yak if you move too fast. Dont do your drag up too tight or you can get some spectacular bust offs! I can vouch for that.
So many fish, so little time,

Thanks for that Charlie, yep thats one of the draw backs of those type of reels but just trolling a swivel the length of the affected line seems to fix it pretty well.  As for fish hooking themselves, I have mixed views on this (probably due to my lack of success in sp fishing), but doesn't it depend on how agressively they are feeding? Also, I have heard Tiny Coe and other sp specialists say to strike hard several times in order to "sink the hook".
Anyway, might have to ask santa for one of the other style of reels with the star drag for trolling. Now I know why the pro's always have so many rods! Cheers mate.

Absolutely if fishing SPs whilst casting and retrieving you need to strike the fish quite hard to set the hook, this can be a bit tricky because sometimes the fish seem to just mouth the SPs and you can pull the SP out of the fishes mouth where as other times they hammer it and hook themselves. When trolling the fish will hook themselves most times. Its good having 2 rods but if you just have an SP rod just cast it out with your SP on and troll it between spots. When drifting do the same when paddling back up to the top of your drift. It can be a bit of a pain if there are lots of kahawai around if you're paddling back up wind as you can get blown back quite a way while dealing to the kahawai.
So many fish, so little time,

I think some of you are confusing dragging on the drift with trolling under paddle power.

HLD's advice is a good one for working SP's or bait for that matter on the bottom behind the yak with the rod in the hand or in the rod holder.     Most of the time you will need a drogue to slow you down to keep a Sp dragging near the bottom.   Keep the drag on enough so that fish hook themselves but without busting you off.    Dragging with Mr Rodholder is getting little mention by the gurus despite its obvious success rate.   It just isn't cool nor does it require big $$$$ tackle.      Just think about it, a dragged lure is fishing all the time and fish hook themselves, while a cast Sp is only a short while in the strike zone with a lot of strikes missed on the slack line drop.

The same drag setting also applies to trolling, KY, Kingies or albacore.    For trolling it is best to have the rod in a centre rod holder forward enough so that it does not interfer with paddling.    If you troll from a rear rod holder you will not see missed bites and might not even know when you got a small fish on.
