Keeping a journal for the local sounds useful BB, I'm getting to know mine a little better, the seasonal movements, where the fish might be morning and afternoon, on an in coming and out going tide, where the bait fish are, which areas of mud have fish feeding, the water temperature etc, there's a lot to register and it's all in flux.
Muppet was of course variously helpful for the newbie: new penny and bruised banana 5in jerk shads and one rod, were terrific tips I found!
I think I vaguely recall his seasonal tally: 451 snapper, 12 dozen King Fish, 150 John Dory, 1000kg of mystery fillets @ $50kg, minus one packet of Zman soft bait and a Sabiki rig = $500 profit towards a new reel:) God bless him.

Fruits of todays labor.  Launched at 8.30 came n around 11.30 or may been later tide was quite low. Caught a wave in and rode it like a champ and then dismounted in waist deep and dragged yak in.
4 snaps and 1 gurnard came home. Not bad for five pillies took as bait and a unlucky smallish  kahawai I caught used for bait. Let few legal snaps go. Lost one maybe better one… thinking going back to gamma octopus hooks, non recurves. Been losing odd good fish on recurves.

Well done Shane tasty fillets and some surfing.
I spent the day and much of the last week at the Northshore hospital EDU...with a family member, things are looking up:) Hope to be back out fishing soon.
As for recurves, if I fished just one rod I'd probably drop the recurve, but the recurve is useful fishing two rigs no?

Yeah they (recurves) work ok on larger half baits or heads hooked once through nose or tail or top of a steak. But actively fishing baits even strips or cubes, and especially pillies,, would rather go gamma octopus. We used to use 4/0  5/0 gammas exclusively when we’re bigger fish to be had, but no good with smaller fish around these days that will still swallow those.
We fish light out of yak so maybe 6/0 is my thinking. In boat we we use 8/0s and 9/0 but those are big snapper and shark attracting baits, you and even I don’t like in yak. Also harder to set big hook in yak on lighter gear. In boat an 8/0 is great as can still slip overside with live mack for kingi. But yak is different - ultimate bait is half big mack or nice big piece of kahawai… which 6/0 can do and hopefully still release little greedy ones should they interfere, which is an increasing thing these days of fewer big fish.

I was set to go this morning but the wind had picked up overnight, so I  wandered down to the beach, 10kt N squalling to 15+ so too messy for me. I checked again in the afternoon and it had dropped a couple of kt but was still sloppy and the shore break at low tide was barreling in.
There was one guy anchored about 1km from the sth end of Campbells, his yak disappeared with the swell, then a fluorescent orange head would bob up, so good luck to him.
I was tempted as gannets were diving 200m out from the middle of the beach, there would have been good kahawai fun to be had, but that'll have  to wait another week for this to settle down.

Sorry lads been slack on the reports!

Was a busy winter playing Pressy rugby and kids sport still managed a few winter trips though, a couple good bags and a skunking in July... first time in 5 years , very humbling paddle back in a nasty southerly.

Had a couple great quick trips to OP on the yak recently binning out in an hour or less, snaps up to 60cm, double hook ups with a slider out the back and softie out the front alsomanaged a few full trips right round Waiheke on the boat last two weekends. Come across some huge work ups , Gannett, dolphins and lots of snaps just north of Onetangi 30m, no kahwia or kings though.

Kingaling unsure if it was you or not but an article in Boating Nz September issue had an oarsome article on a kayak legend Paul Caffyn. Dude practically paddled the world. Reminded me of your interest in paddling to GB. This guy has released a few books I'm sure would be worth reading if intrested in navigating long distance on kayak... anyway magazine with buying just for his article.

As always good work HY and the rest of the crew for keeping up the yak chatter .

Photo from OP yak snaps.

Nice catches!
I recently started long lining. Tried first at Campbells around the 10m marks. The sea bed is fine mud and sand. Aiming for some gurny, but only snaps came. Picked up after one hour or so. Many were 28-29, with two around 35. Most fun part was 6 small kawa on one sabiki which equals HY's record.
Tuesday was at West side of Rangi, for shelter of easterly. The weather was not good as forecasted, but decreased the boat traffic, otherwise I felt that area is too busy for long line. Managed 3 snaps home by mix of squid, salted bonito and chicken breast. This time son was with me, and he was quite happy about the trip.

Still looking forward some gurny fun. Are they not fond of my bait?

The hooks are half 4/0 and half 5/0 (with float beads), often I missed a few stoppers so 20~22 hooks on a line.
The wire on hook prevented fish being gut hooked very effectively.

Mate long lining is  not way to fish off here, or even in rangi channel. All about little fish we do don’t  try to catch, including small kahawai. For bigger legal snapper fish use a softie or a bigger bait like on 7/0 or 8/0 hook moving forward on a rod, with maybe whole fillet of those miniature kahawai. Or whole head. Pretty confident gurnard run is over for this year as well as is seasonal winter thing.
Gurnard always better on dropper almost vertical with 2 hooks… recurve we use 5/0- 6/0 recurve and a two to three ounce sinker on bottom. Best done with a light rod. Now you’ll just get undersized snapper. Best wait till next year to target those gurnard  and go up hook size or two with a strayline (lighter weight like 1/4 ounce right on top of hook) and target bigger snaps now coming in to inner gulf.
Cheers Shane.

I got four yellowtails on my Sabiki on the way out this morning, which was all the bait I needed. The water visibility was good and there was no wind which was great, but the really exciting moment today was watching a huge snapper follow a fish I had hooked to the surface, it came to about a metre below the surface, but wasn't interested in the next bait I offered, still it made me happy to see such a magnificent fish at my local patch.
I rigged up a two hook trace with 35lb mono, the big snapp bit the first hook clean off, it had a decent pair of chompers.

Thanks Shane.
I was drifting, stray lining with two 7 octopus hooks snell rigged through half yellow tails, I thought my 35lb mono trace would have been enough as I only use 10lb fluro soft baiting, but the snapp bit the bottom hook clean off, god knows what his large friend would have done...they're out there:)

So there is still a even bigger monster snap out there. Hopefully avoids everyone and just follows odd one up.
They come in this time of year.

Spent the last week working remotely from Mangawhai.

Conditions were average most of the week, but managed to get out for a fish before work on Friday.

A quick brekkie, then took the kayak trolley across the road to the estuary and was on the water within 30 mins of waking up.

Found a perfectly sized small ky in the estuary first cast on a tiny little 7g micro jig. Bridle rigged the ky and headed out towards the bar. Had to bring the livie back in shortly after as a big pod of dolphins came and escorted me out the estuary which was awesome to see them checking me out and racing me.
They are pretty smart and I didn't think they would take the livie but would hate to hook a dolphin..

The bar was flat as, started drifting and picked up a bigger ky for the smoker on the little jig, then a large gurnard on softbait which spat the hook when it reached the surface. Angry
Then a pannie on softbait. All on my new light setup with 10lb braid/fluoro, loving the change down from 20lb.

After drifting for a good while and a couple undersize snaps later, my live bait reel started screaming and I grabbed it, anticipating a 50kg kingfish on the line before finding the tell tale dead weight of a John Dory, and it was a good sized one, can't complain about that.

Started paddling in to get back to work, with a couple cheeky casts en route. Trying to get a gurnard to tick off 4 species - I was casting, leaving the bail arm open and paddling opposite to drift direction - effectively making ~100m casts.
With the idea that it'd be easier to keep the SB on the bottom as I drift, doing a slow retrieve

It was on one of these "casts" that I hooked up and still had about 70m of line out, so it was hard to tell if it was a big fish or just lots of line drag in the water.
Taking it easy on the 10lb line, I got more over the top of the fish it started feeling more like a snapper and doing some big runs. Got it up and it was a decent size. Nearly made me late for work though!

Very happy with that quick morning trip, back home in time for an 8.45 meeting. And JD for lunch, stoked as

Great trip Kingaling.
I went for a paddle today, I got a few nice snapps, a big gurnard and a couple of sharks .
I was stray lining with fresh yellowtail, and then did some soft baiting on my way back in, which is where I got the gurnard. I was able to release the hammerheads, one was over a metre, but they're such a pain to catch on the yak, which means it's back to soft baiting for me.
The fishing was good for my home patch, but my claim to fame today was getting  back to Campbells without turtling, the shore break at low tide was as treacherous as I've ever seen it, I could hear kids on the beach shrieking as the surf boomed ashore, the sets were fast and up to a metre high, with some rouge waves thrown in.
I stayed out behind the breakers going up and down the beach for 10-15 minutes, then picked a flat spot and went for it, I almost made it to the beach on one wave, but was slammed by another tube in about 1/2 metre of water, but I edged hard into it until my paddle went crack, but my yak stayed upright as the surf flung me onto the beach, I'm almost a legit kayaker now:)

Top work HY.

Leave those poor hammerheads alone eh. Softbaits will probably help with that. Although I have caught a Rig on one of my homemade skutes once. And also got bit off on what I suspect was a big shark up Kauwau Island ways. Also on a skute.

Geez you make Campbells sound like a dangerous surf beach.
I actually found a picture of you coming back in, with a few locals watching.
