It was a squally old day on the Bays this afternoon with gusts of 30km+ and then nice calm stretches, it was calm enough to get a dozen gurnard.
I caught most of the gurnard today on a 21gm lumo Flea micro jig, and half a dozen small Kahawai to boot. A pestilence of small snapper took the lure too, but they past and it was back to the gurnard.
I got my PB gurnard today. big G measured 43cm , you might notice some over the top brain surgery, I'll have to work on that.
It was good to be out despite the wind, Team NZ looked  like they were enjoying it.

Awesome mate lot of good eaters. Those fresh smaller kahawai are very handy baits for all sorts of species, gurnard included and bigger snaps, and make great sashimi.

Time to take up marlin and yft fishing then ... you have a few months to think about it and to prepare.
I don’t mind dropping you and your kayak a few miles offshore  (like 20 NM from Tutukaka) and keeping a lazy eye on you, and most importantly bringing you back with your fish, if it chooses not to be released.
Don’t feel you need to get back to me immediately... but something to think on and dream about. Wink

you can also borrow  one of these, provided you leash it on to kayak to catch one of said fish.

Was off looking for game lure skirts today unsuccessfully, but did manage to score this little reel out of special bin for $20 at marine deals. Will be good back up for my favourite little bakelite alvey on gurnard and bait fish.  Have put it on a similarly priced old light spin rod which has already been successful with gurnard although no longer my number one choice. Spooled it with 15 lb platypus.

Didn't end up going out today but think we will try tomorrow arvo off arkles on the boat, incoming tide and easterly should be tolerable.

Got seven piper on my new fly reel land based today. Hooked quite few more but they throw hooks just like marlin. Piper fishing is similarly addictive, especially using a fly reel.
Kept them for kingi baits. Will tow em, or more likely let down to fish I see from yak. Bait and switch technique..
Wife was bit disappointed I did not clean them up for eating, as they are yummy. But I had chucked em into my bait bag with a few pillies.
Not sure would be quite as tasty with pilchard in-fussed juice!

Too windy for the yak today so smashed out in the boat and caught this girl in Shane's stomping grounds. Took a fresh slither of Kawahai and would have really made that fly reel sing!
