My fave spot? Matheson just edges Martins
Best spot probably Jones as there is so much you can do there a big area to cover. And some very nice fish to catch.

Looking at trying out Jones bay for the first time, actually, will be the second time further north of Narrowneck for me in the 3yrs I have done kayak fishing

A quick search suggests Maori rock or Fairchild
Seems to be big current as well, but no real trip reports around this time of season Jun - Aug & what I have seen can be really good or very ordinary

Prefer anchor burley & baits over the colder months
Was thinking the shallows anywhere up to Bluebell pt on the outgoing & riding the incoming on the way back in
Any specific shallow suggestions would be welcome

Hi BananaBoat.  Castor, campbells, mairangi, and murrays bays for me is my local.  If I’m feeling very energetic l paddle as far as up to browns bay by reef there to get among the massive schools of gurnard. You can launch there as well, and can it can be excellent fishing, also if you are thirsty afterwards has excellent pubs ... my favourite is the deep creek.
To get fish like Dan did today you need to go a tad further north.. like an hours drive, at a guess, might be bit less depending on traffic, although probably not a lot of traffic 6am in morning. Either way too early.Wink

Thanks mate, will have to try out the grunters up your way

The Manukau is my local only 6ks away but have struck out learning new fishing grounds on that side quite a few times recently & yet, have met other kayakers who do really well on that side with the grunters but keep it all a secret where they go... oh well, that's how it goes sometimes eh, until you crack it

Yes Dan,   although some good gurnards off there now for the patient.
What I am quite keen to see turn up are some really big snapper off bays by end of August like we had last year.  Saving up a few flounder heads for them.
Tucked up at Tutukaka tonight. It is very stormy. Am drinking freshly squeezed grapefruit (off my well laden tree here) with tequila and soda... called a “paloma”, very refreshing!

Might be more pleasant to launch at lunchtime and fish the outgoing.

good thinking actually doesn’t look bad this arvo but might also go tomorrow after lunch. Fair dump of fresh water this morning which might upset the salinity on gurnard grounds.

Wouldn't the fresh water float on the top? I wouldn't have thought it would affect where the gurnard feed.

I'm going to have a crack for them tomorrow arvo in the boat.

I’m gonna get up early and head north. Try a bit of livebaiting otherwise head out a bit deeper for a jig.

Slept in, must have turned my alarm off in my sleep. Went north, got a small pannie early on then lots of small ones. Had a look at leigh reef all the way out to 50m but not much happening. Tucked into a bay just south of cape Rodney and got a nice squid, about 500g. Then once the outgoing started pumping I paddled into a stiff breeze back towards the launch spot. Got a big livie and put him out for an hour or so while I kept softbaiting. Finall found a school of snaps and pulled a couple more out, including one nice fish around 8lb. Pretty dead day but came away with a couple of meals.
