Was a nice afternoon, fished till dark off campbells.. 5 nice pannies ... pulled hook on what was definitely much better fish. Really need to get some better hooks... went to some octopus recurves this arvo. Dropped lot of fish so went back to smaller standard octopus but pulled hook on big fish on that. They seemed to be light on bite.
Got nice kahawai and quite a few yellowtail for bait for next session. Even got well 35cm legal snap on my bait handline on a hook which would catch piper six feet under the yak.
No gurnard where they should been.
Had to wash kayak down with bowl of water and a dish brush.
Wink

Quick fish this morning, out at 10 back by 12. Was inspired to go out when a mate called about 9.30 am on a walk with family and said was glass out there and couple of boats and few yaks out. So after finishing my coffee I walked kayak down to beach.
Paddled out past one yaker and asked how was getting on .. a few good pulls he said but his mate had just gone in with 60 cm snap. So paddled on and anchored up 37 feet outside boats and yak. Only took limited amount of bait.
Tide was strong and got few snapper nothing big but couldn’t catch any gurnard on dropper rig just quite a few 28-30cm snaps which went back. So retired my dropper alvey rig. Last bait half a pillie on strayline rig I got a nice big gurnard, well over 40cm to go with a couple of 35 cm snaps on strayline.
Paddled in as out of bait and wind was up anyway. Paddled past yaker I’d spoken to on way out to see him land a nice big gurnard. Amazing cause he wasn’t that deep maybe 30 feet. There are clearly few nice gurnard there, maybe would been better for them as tide slowed down.

Anyway nice feed of fish for couple of hours. Looking forward to my gurnard tonite for tea as wife likes snapper better. I‘m thinking I’ll have one fillet tonight and other tomorrow.

Mammals like dolphins can shut down the bite on snaps Dan, probably has kings fleeing area as well.
But pretty terrible if long liners fishing for Leigh Fisheries I would assume round there, have been hammering the Takatu & Omaha Bay area... that is crap form. Makes you angry.

My favourite inshore fish Dan, makes going fishing in cold well worth it.. and looking forward to when they start to run. Usually starting to roe up next mth.
Plus coincides with better class of bigger snapper (over 5kg moochers) in next few months and little snapper clearing off to allow big baits enough soak time to get smashed. Love winter!

Yep I tied up some gurnard rigs yesterday, looking forward to it. I usually get them off Arkles in 10m.

Thinking about using an orange slider as a sinker. Thoughts?

Look very similar to rigs I use TC but I use green bead on my single strand droppers with mustard demon recurves about 4/0 from memory, tried 3/0s but little snapper take them down throat... so don’t use hooks too small.
I use a 2 ounce spoon sinker, which if bounce on the bottom hopefully emulates a small crab. Your orange slider could actually be real good idea (more crab like). Hope you don’t mind if I steal your idea...sure I’ve got one kicking round in tackle box somewhere,

Yeah those are mustad demon 6/0 which seem to work great on gurnard. I’ll do a side by side test between a 3oz sinker and a 100g slider and report back.

Dan I let one my best gurnard secrets out there, and you seized upon it.. nice work.
Spoon sinker will improve your fishing but TC may well have a good idea. You could even do a compressed down weighted slider that bobs along bottom.. has attraction of lure .. another question should it have hooks in it, but why not.
Probably doing something I discourage now .. overthinking a solution to an easy problem. My own past theory refined,  with TC thoughts included, is a 2 ounce spoon, but in shrimp colours (probably orange to reflect a crab in moult)... similar to my old way dull lead sinker with no hooks making commotion and any gurnard attracted rise off bottom to get the ledger baits close to bottom. Bloody confused myself already,  but I’ll figure it out. Wacko

We should get an expert like smudge in to critique (and possibly steal) sorry I meant give constructive feedback on our ideas on this subject.
I only think I think like a gurnard, I maybe dilussional. But Smudge might know.
I heard for years you could not think or see what Marlin does or sees. Are gurnard different? I know I‘Ve caught more gurnard than marlin so I reckon I am better thinking like a gurnard than a marlin. May be overestimating myself .. but have a few results.

haven’t used prawns but pillies are good in little pieces and those you lose keep gurnard around without berlying (which you don’t want to do as will attract aggressive smaller snapper and gummy sharks) , Bonito can be great as in fantastic (first use) .. but little inconsistent after and less consistent refrozen. Best is small strips of very fresh yellowtail and even got few big snapper on ledger using that,  8 - 10 lb , they are handful on non dragged 5 inch alvey, my specialist gurnard rig.
