There are about 4 or 5 easy ways down out near the end. Going straight off the end isn't the best way down at all especially if wet

Yep. Its been a long time for me. Is the info in the Auck rock fishing guide?

JK have you fished off the rock platforms out off the point before? does it fish any better? I note there is some reefage in front of it.

Thank you.

Annual land-based rock fishing comp with a bunch of mates.  This year decided to go to Great Barrier.  Only 3 peps competing this time, but the usual good banter, beers and laughs continued.  Were hoping for some BIG moochers out of the kelp : )

Landed some respectable fish and the intensity on the bite was amazing.  Only kept fish that were gut hooked and couldn't safely be released.  Pretty hilly country and the legs felt every moment walking in and out. Spoke to land owners before wandering around.

Released plenty of snaps around 2-3kgs, kings in berley trail, sharks and dolphins etc...

Biggest snap went just over 4kg, like I say were hoping for some larger models but hey that's fishing.  Ended up taking 18 snaps home so no complaints.

Below vid of some of the views/action:

Nice mate. We did a barrier trip earlier in the year and had an absolute blast. Gonna make it an annual thing for sure.

Found my way to a sweet little spot north of Whangarei with a little help from one of the locals.

Was looking for a couple a pannies for lunch and was hopeful to release a moocher or kingie if they showed up.

I got to my spot just on sunrise, cranked the berly hard and set about getting a livie. Once the livie was deployed, the frozen kina i had brought up were put to good use as berly.

The KY were around, smashing anything they could find. But no Kings right on dead low tide.  I rigged up the biggest pilchard i could find, bait cotton and a single 6/0 circle hook in the gut with the hopes it would make it past the KY and get among the snapper.

I put the baitrunner in the rod holder as the livie was starting to get caught up in the weeds and needed some attention... 2 mins later, the baitrunner starts screaming and the line heading straight down into the deep weeds. The fight was short after i was able to jig it out of the weeds and bring it to the surface. I was only fishing 10kg mono, but the 40lb trace was good enough to drag it up the rocks.

I had hoped to release it, but after a few mins swimming it in a large rock pool and seeing it had been gut hooked, there was no choice but to Iki.

Tipped the scales at just over 21LB. I called it a day soon after as i wanted to make the most of this fish.

I was luck enough to find a very helpful local BnB down the road from where i was staying who helped me smoke it up, and was able to give the head to the local Maori.

Always be prepared, you never know what will turn up.
here fishy, fishy fishy.....

Nice one George, sometimes the big ones turn up when you least expect it. Good effort getting it out of the weeds on the light trace!

Weather was too good on Saturday, so hit up a local spot for a dusk fish off the bricks. Fished from 5.20 - to 7:00pm. Landed 2 pannies in first half hour, but only throw backs after that. Seems when it got dark the decent fish buggered off. Plenty of piper and other bait fish in the berley trail, but only had my "go to" snapper rod, so no time to catch some fresh bait. bit of fun, and listened to the Warriors claw out a win.

Was up at the Bay of Islands sailing around Xmas with the family. Boxing day the weather came right and we went for a walk around one of the central islands, heaps of rock fishing potential!!

Sadly the rods were back onboard...

By 5:30pm and a few beers down, I couldn't take it any more so got my daughter to drop me and my son off on the bricks in the little rubber ducky on the back of the yacht.

We had a 1kg bag of pillies and some squid, no berley. The ledge we were fishing was shallow, but had a nice gut and some surge. Heaps of Kina everywhere, so we started chumming these out. We only had an hour to fish so we got straight into it. Snapper on the bite straight away and my son landed the first 2 pannies, 1 of which was close to 5lbs.

I was kept busy getting the kinas in the trail and saw a BIG shadow mooch through, thought it was a kingi, but colours didn't match. It was a shark!! Didn't look like a bronzy more of a dark grey/blue. anyway it cruised off and left us to land 2 more snapper, me landing this time (phew....).

The shark came back in the berley trail, must have been attracted by the snapper we were fighting, or maybe the kina too??

Next minute my son is yelling dad, dad I have hooked the shark, line was peeling off the baitrunner at alarming rate, then the shark leaped clean out of the water!! Must have been a Mako. The boy was fizzing and hanging on well. Not much we could do with 10kg mono. The shark turned left and ran in close and rubbed us off.

A lot of fun

Not long after we got picked up in the rubber duck to fillet the fish and eat some Kina for ourselves. Totally enjoyable hour on the stones and productive too.

Love the BOI's

Awesome!!!Gotta be happy with a great feed for an hours worth of effort. Thats an area i have fished very few times, but want to get there in the coming months. Yet another area of superb land based options if you can get out to them.

Chur for the report!

Scored some pannies off Ruakaka near the river mouth last night. Hot bite from 9pm till 10.15, baits getting hammered as soon as they hit the water with plenty of fish released. Half pillies on 90 mile rig, 5/0 recurve hook.

Hmm kingies are in the shallows atm and seem perfect for stickbaits and livies... but they won’t take them πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ anyone else having kingies literally brush past a jack mackerel?
If people knew the really important things in life, there would be shortages of fishing tackle not playstations

Decided to brave the weather this morning with plan to get back before the wind turned **** SW
Was setup around 10am, 1 hr before the bottom of tide she was breezy and threatening skies to the west as i pulled in a couple of close to 30s that went back
Lost one rig so decided to ditch the 1/2,0z sinker and just strayline for re-rig
Also threw on rain jacket seeing it was looking real dark to the west and within no more than a minute i was bent over back to the wind as horizontal rain and hail tried to blow me off my perch, seriously strong winds but lasted no more than couple mins
Back to fishing and pulled in a couple of better fish 40/36cm and returned another 2 around the 30 mark
Headed home after couple hrs before that front came through, was good fishing the Snaps were not being picky it was grab and run so fun morning and a feed πŸ‘
The old Rocky2 Baitrunner combo

Yeah mate was out that way today and it looked real nice.
A king on the bricks is worth 5 in a boat.
