Hi fellow fishos,

I will be visiting North Island for the first time in early November. I have never fly fished before but have caught a few trout on soft plastics (spinning) during my trip to South Island 2 years ago.

Will spend a couple of nights in Taupo and 1 week in Rotorua. Understand the fishing licences are different for Lake taupo and Rotoura. Also read about Didymo.
A couple of questions, if you any of you can assist:
  • Are the rivers around Rotorua open to using softplastics? Which rivers do you recommend.
  • Will it be better to hire a charter for trolling the lakes or just concentrating on the river shores
  • What is the fishing like during early to mid Nov? Do the trout move towards the shore line to feed?
  • How much are waders in NZ ? Wondering if its cheaper to buy one in NZ than Australia.
  • Anyone willing to have a fishing buddy for a day, I would love to join you.
  • Would it be hard to try out fly fishing with a guide? Will prob not do it as I'm on a tight budget and can't afford the $500 a day guided thingie.

Thanks in advance for any help.

cheers
