A kayaker who sparked a rescue effort at Papamoa Beach has returned to shore.

Emergency services gathered on Papamoa Beach to try to rescue a kayaker stuck at sea.

A police spokeswoman said officers were called to the beach just before 10am after reports of a kayaker "struggling" about 200m offshore.

The spokeswoman said there was a strong offshore wind and it appeared one kayaker had made it back to shore but second second kayaker was still out in the water.

Police have been in touch with the Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club to get lifeguards out in an IRB, she said.

The kayaker had since made it safely to shore and did not appear to need medical treatment, the spokeswoman said.

Yes, if the weather holds the location is Rogers. Better chance of bigger turtles fish there.

Looks like a very small window on Swellmap.
Looking at metvuw I’d be picking 15-20 knot westerlies.
Love fishing, love my job. It's a bloody shame that they clash.

Lets hope it actually pans out as forecast. Does seem like its a narrow window. If the metservice calls the same thing tomorrow then we should be sweet.

I'll be at the beach taking entries from 6am, weigh in at 11am I reckon.

Still looking OK at the moment. So, it's still on. Models say light 4-6kts, Metservice reckons 15kts, all from the SW. Rogers is fairly sheltered is it not? Might be a bit .5m of close N swell to liven up the entries & exits...

Will check it again tomorrow which should give the forecasts better accuracy and make the final call.
