OK here goes - 17/01/09

"Rainmaker" Predator 610 alluminium hull and top - 6.7m LOA
Suzuki 175 DF 4/s - not yet run in.
21" 3 blade prop.

23knts @ 4000rpm = 19 - 20.5 litres per hour
6.9 - 7.8knts tolling speed 7.2 - 8.6 liters per hour.

Hit the crappy stuff - 15 WNW on the nose with opposing tide up the motuhiu channel - 19 knts @ 3800rpm = 19 litres per hour.

Less than half fuel useage of the old Merc 150 EFI at cruising speed and only 25 -30% fuel useage at trolling speed.

60 miles including messing around = 50 litres.

It can only get better as it free's up..

The little extra weight made the boat a different animal, it seems a tad bow up at cruise but once we hit 30 knts it seemed to settle.

Nice - I like - hi fives

Aye-Aye cloth eyes.

"Kings Ransom" Fyran 7.6m aluminium hull and glass hardtop
Evinrude Etec 200hp 2009 Model
# blade prop

24knts @ 4000rpm = 36ltrs per hr
6.5 - 7.5knts trolling = 6.8 - 9.6 ltrs per hour (depending on sea conditions)

Did a full day trolling last week with four on board for 12 hrs on the water and usage was 86 ltrs.

Not sure of miles travelled but somewhere around 80.

Pretty good for a two stroke on a big trailer boat. I am happy with it.

Biggear - are you sure about your fuel burn figures? Your 4000rpm cruise is probably 7 - 9 lph higher than the same size 4 strokes that I know of, and I don't think that the ETEC is really meant to be that much more thirsty. Even our old Yamaha 200 2 strokes are only ~40lph at 4000rpm. I have observed from a number of different boating forums that ETEC owners sometimes need to play with their props a bit more than most to get the best economy out of their engine. If you are sure of your fuel figures I would try and find someone who could advise on propping ETEC's for best allround economy vs performance. A search on the internet public forums might give you some ideas on what fuel burn you should get and maybe even some ideas about props.

What rpm's? If that is the normal 4000rpm cruise your fuel burn is the nearly same as a old fashioned Yamaha 150hp 2 stroke. An average 4 stroke would be around 22 - 23lph at 4000rpm if correctly propped. I don't know the Etecs, but I have heard that they can be a bit trickier than most 4 strokes to get set up for best economy. The last couple of posts seem to confirm that as the owners appear to be getting poor economy compared to the 4 strokes that the Etec is meant to be as efficient as.

I'll have to check again today. Its a big boat, and we usually have 4-5 people on board so that would make a difference I guess. I'll have a play today and see what we come up with.

Biggear - If the boat is propped correctly (which the cruise speed would seem to indicate it is) then the size of the boat should make very little difference. The engine is designed to optimally produce a certain amount of HP and burn a certain amount of fuel at certain rpm's. There is a bit of a range, so the figures can vary a bit, but not usually hugely. Bigger boats just get smaller props so that they will go slower for the same HP than a smaller boat with a larger prop will.
Loading will however make a difference as the boat may well be carrying 'too much prop' if you set it up for a light load but are in fact carrying a heavy load when you check the figures.
For some reason Etec's seem to be 'prop sensitive" and I know some owners have tried several different brands before finding the one that gives them the economy they expected. There is another thread running at the moment about a 60hp Etec and on that thread there is a link to an Etec owners site. I haven't checked it out, but it might be worth having a look for ideas if your economy is not what it should be.

Hi all, I have just put a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke on the back of our fyran 580 and we are using between 13 and 16 ltrs per hour @ 4000 rpm,  averaging 20 knots.   First time trolling with this motor the other day and I was using 5.5 - 6.5 lts per hour  @  around 7 knots.

Tagit. Had a proper play with it over the weekend. 3600rpms gave 24.5knts at 26l/hr.
Am trolling at 1850 rpms to give 6.5knts at 6.8l/hr.
I'm pretty happy with the economy. Like anything new, you have to play around to get to know their economy areas. I just have to learn that the Arabs have got enough money and that the full on the throttle doesn't have to be used
