Saturday 25/7/20  7:15 to 11am
Did what Muppet said, and targeted gurnard out from Browns Bay reef.  Started with a couple of small gurnard, released, and then we caught 4 good gurnard keepers.  Also caught some jack macks, used as baits, but most gurnard caught on small pieces of bullet tuna.  Bite slowed right down at about 9, but we stuck around for another hour waiting for another wave of grunters.  Spend the last hour fishing into Browns Bay reef for snapper, and nabbed 3 up to 38cms.

Lesson for the day - fishing with 2 x 3-hook ledgers, and a sprat line is a recipe for tangles, and we got a doozy.  Probably missed a couple of grunters in the time taken to sort it.  So now I carry 2 spare sets of gear set up for gurnard.

Was satisfying that the plan came together, and got some of the target species.

Monday 27/7/20  7:30 to 12:30
Tried to raid Gumboot's carrot patchon the Huia bank in Manukau harbour.  Excellent weather, light breeze, moderate tide by Manukau standards.  Tried 4 different spots on the Huia banks, and another spot on the bank off Kaitarakihi while the tide was changing from outgoing to ingoing, but this spot was dead as (maybe the slack tide).  Usually KY are a by-catch when targeting gurnard, and if you catch less than one KY per gurnard you're doing well.  This time, KY took over on every spot, and they were coming aboard 3 at a time on the 3-hook flasher rigs I used.  I lost count of the KY, but there were over 20 of them, with at least 3 triples and 3 doubles.  Tried mullet, bullet tuna, pilchard.  Not one other species, all KY, unusual for the Big Muddy.

The second report will also be posted in the Manukau Fishing Reports thread.

25/7/20 left stanmmore bay in dark my fish finder broke down. Anchored off army bay about 6.15 and fished the sun rise was all on for till day light. By them had 5 in the bin from 36cm to 45 cm used   rotten old pilichards on a lightly weighted flasher rig pink in colour. Once bite died off moved to approx 500 meters and got another 6 snapper on out going tide was a good productive few hours

Nice report there Far Quirk

On the muddy, what depths were you fishing & what weights of sinkers to get to the bottom

Havent had a kahawai in ages.
To me, at half thumb sized bites, makes the best deep fried fish.... if cut into bigger pieces, taste like bloody kahawai & not so nice eating... if that makes sence

Wednesday B&B trip.  Fantastic day (if you could miss the fog patches).  Flat as.  Tried bait off Takapuna cliffs - a rare thing for me.  Managed a feed, but lost more decent fish in the rocks - must be too close?  Or maybe I just need more muscle rather than S/P wimpishness and letting them run.   Moved further out and only pickers....  Need more practice.  Wish we could get more days like this.

nice report mate
I usually go there too in my kayak, might have to try in closer & shallower than the 5-7m I usually fish.... as you say - only pickers
Do you remember the water temp, surely it must be starting to warm up
Was there a few weeks ago - 13.6 deg

Nice pics and a well organised boat brmbrm.  All I see missing there are some mullet fillets from Top Catch or Hunting & Fishing.  Maybe other outlets have them, but those 2 have had them within the last few weeks.  Ouch - I've been close with hooks recently, but not quite in to the barb.

nice pics brm brm.Never seen it so calm. Regardless of the fish just being out there is good for the soul, lifts the spirit, sharpens the senses.
Maybe try a little handline over the side, two small hooks, scrap of bait. May get a jack mack or two. A whole fillet or half fish can sometimes work well.
Hopefully will be out there soon,as soon as i get something reliable to tow boat with. More complex than i thought.

Shortish trip Monday morning just because I could.  Tried off East Coast Bays for gurnard, a trip planned 3 weeks earlier.  Windy, so dropped the pick but blew around a bit.  One snap and a carrot inside half an hour, so thought things looking good.  Then bites just stopped.  Picked up one more snapper.  Maybe the berley scared them off.  Maybe the fish were out of practice after a couple of weeks with nobody trying to catch them.  Maybe my mojo has gone.  Need more practice I guess.

Tried fishing Sunday 6/9/20, but my boat didn't play ball.  The fuel line into the motor leaked badly, so went home in a bad mood.  Anyone else have this problem?  The rubber O-ring in the female connector that clips onto the motor wears out within a few months of fitting, and leaks like a sieve.  I bought 2 of the connectors this time from Burnsco to have a spare on board for the next time it happens.

I have heard of this problem.
It is the quality of the oring.
I might be wrong but I believe you can get a better quality o ring from a specialist supplier.
Like a bearing company.
Plenty around.
Just cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0!

Sunday 13/9/20  6:45 to 10:30am
Fished the shallows near the Takapuna cliffs.  Tried a new outgoing spot, and there were a couple of promising long runs with light drag and the rods in the rodholder.  Picked up the rod, threw the bail  arm open and waited for the next run.  Nada.  Got the feeling the fish were keepers because, they bit and ran quite hard, and at least once I was holding the rod to fell the bites.  Used 8/0 and 10/0 circle hooks, and maybe if I used 4/0s like I used to, would have had more hookups.
Tide ran out of legs by 8am so moved to an incoming spot where I caught a 68cm snapper a couple of months ago.  Only caught baby snapper and a couple of KY.  The first one used for bait, and the second was the only keeper for the whanau.
Used heaps of Salty Dog "100% fish" berley near the bottom, plus bread in a top berley to try to get sprats around - they didn't show up.  Bait used included mullet fillets, squid, tuna bullets, pilchards and fresh KY.
Strangely quiet.
Definitely lost my mojo.  Spring seems to be the season where I struggle.

Tough luck, Geoff. I know Mark Kitteridge reckons Sept is his hardest month of the year for the inshore fishing he prefers, so you're not alone.

i know you're very experienced and don't need to be told how to suck eggs, but I have better success with circle hooks on a heavier drag if left in the rod holder. For me, that seems to suit the hook's design and roll the hook into the corner of the mouth if the rod's unattended.
Light drag may mean the hook won't turn correctly?

If you have the rod in hand, you're better able to read the situation and your light drag isn't an issue.
Anyway, just a thought.

Good point Lester.  I'll tighten the drag a bit and let the circle hooks do their work.  I took your advice and had a couple of squid rigs on the go.  During the outgoing, I had a 2 jig ledger rig about 5 m down the berley trail, but no bites or hookups.  Once I moved for the incoming, put the ledger rig away, and cast a single squid jig around the weed margins hoping to entice one out from cover, but no bites or follows as far I could tell.
The other thing of note was sprats were absent.  Despite bottom berley (Salty Dog fish) and top berley (breadcrumbs) the only hookups on the tiny Uncles Mac Flasher rig were a couple of medium KY (1 landed) and a medium trevally (escaped).  the flasher rig had small bits of squid, which usually does the biz.

nice one, Geoff. Having a rod with a quite flexible tip, like an Ugly Stik, means it can 'bow' to the fish when the line tightens and then it should all (hopefully!) end up with a fish hooked.

At least you tried the squid jigs. Maybe there was something odd going on that day, a shark around or something?
Although I've found that occasionally with shallow reef straylining. Usually there's a cloud of jack macks in the berley, which I can catch on little hooks drifted back; but sometimes nothing but small kahawai (I mean the really small ones). Again, unexplained oddity.

Hopefully next time you'll get another biggie!

I used to use Shimano Eclipse 2-4 Kg rods for straylining.  They were cheap as chips and the components were weak.  But they loaded very progressively and the fish could take the bait a meter or so before encountering serious resistance.  They were deadly on smaller snapper, but pretty useless on bigger ones because they are so soft.  I broke tips and guides and got sick of them.  Maybe an Ugly Stik would be a good replacement.
