There is a pink mao mao (rare colour variety) in Coastal Fishes of NZ an ID guide by Malcom Francis that shows almost identical colour and morphology to this fish.

The text description is "A rare colour variety has black markings on rear of dorsal fin and upper back, and lines of yellow spots on face and upper front part of body; all fins yellow except dorsal, and all have blue margins or blue tips except pectoral."

Sounds and looks like your fish.

Dats a pinky alright. For some reason some are 'black'. The boffins reckon they may be a different species but I fink they just mature males or somefink. At the mokes, one in fifty are like this; elsewhere the ratio is less. But every population has blacks which to me means they are just a pinky and not a separate species

Some of the captures from the last trip to the Sollies, various Berkley SPs, on TiCA Taurus TP1000 and TP4000 reels.

Cheers,
