I was mulling over whether to buy a pair of the new Avet SX Two Speed reels that were recently released.  I read a report on-line of the "first generation" SX's that said they did not have an anti-reverse and that the backplay in the handle was a bit disconcerting when hooked up.  Has anyone got any experience with the Avet SX reels.  What's the verdict?  And what's the story on the anti-reverse??  Seemed unusual for a manufacturer like Avet not to have an anti-reverse on one of its models?? Thanks for any advice you can share.

had an sx - no problems with the anti-reverse.

they have an 'open' drag - so are prone to saltwater ingression and its associated problems - there has been some comments on the bearings not lasting very well because of this - unfortunately, there are no replacements available which are of higher quality at present.

This problem can be somewhat avoided with liberal use of a heavy grease inside the reel and obviously, trying not to dunk the reel in the briney too often.

i think it is a reel worth considering - but requires a bit of care and maintenance to keep it running smooth.

are you considering a 2-speed? myself, dont really see the point for such a small reel...

I was one of the first in the country to get an SX, had it now for about 4 or 5 yrs. Had to replace all the bearings 18mths ago now. I like the reel but its only my 2nd favourite (trini 12 1st). Very very strong, heaps of drag, but a bit industrial.

That's all good information.  I saw the 2 speed models on Melton's website.  They are offering the 2 speed with 280 yards of 50# braided line with 80 yards of 30# mono, or 300 yards of 30# braided line with 120 yards of 20# mono.  The braided line is the new Berkley Hollowpoint.  We do quite a lot of light tackle fishing here (we have one international light tackle tournament that's fished on 12lb test line) & I thought these might be a nice light weight reel.  Melton's say that the reel is grunty enough to land fish up to 100lbs. There are a few of the bigger Avets in use on the island (Bermuda) but I've not seen any SX 2 speeds here yet.

I bought an Avet SX online from Charkbait in the USA last month. I tried it out on the weekend and have some good and some bad opinions of it.
The Good: It has a "dog" system rather than anti-reverse bearings. I have had ARBs give way on some very expensive reels and am quite wary of them now. The result is more slop in the handle with a Dog but that is not a major concern to me
The Bad: I spooled the reel up with 6kg momoi mono (0354mm). and tried out the advertised "cast control". To be fair I never expected it to work and was not surprised when it did not so my thumb was ready to control the overspin. Unfortunately- not quite ready enough and to my great disappointment the mono got jammed between the spool and the frame. This happed even when I began casting using my normal thumbing technique and also when livebaiting and a kingfish picked up a bait I had out and ran with it then changed direction.Jam--- PING!!!
The hype says fine tolerances for manufacture - The reality, at least for the reel I received, is Bottom End rubbish.
Back to using Accurates or my Favourite Duel Speedy 12  for me- More expensive but if I lose a fish it will be my own fault not my reel's.
