Are they that much better than a prowler or similar to justify the extra cost.If I was going to splash out it would be on a fibreglass yak, probably not a Hobie.

I have done a bit of reading about the Hobie boats. The main advantages of the pedal power is that you have your hands free for fishing but still able to move.

This could be useful to hold the boat in a spot while fishing in a current, or maybe when you are fighting a large fish you would be able to pedal after it while fighting the fish.... Could be useful in a wide variety of situations. They also give you arms a rest and would probably be faster when both the pedals and the paddle is used at once. It is a interesting idea...

The main disadvantages that i can think of include

-They are expensive.
- You would (at least I would) look stupid pedaling a kayak.
- Might not be overly reliable.

One of the blokes at fregs in Wellington reckoned the pedal drive is a bit on the fragile side when coming into the shallows.
The do yaks without the pedal drive too which if they are anything like their surfboards and catamarans are probably pretty good
