Been out yesterday with a friend looking for the end of the tuna run. Things looked promising with water temperature 20.9 and colour quite blue. In 90m, approx. 12km offshore, against all forecasts I got caught by a vicious westerly wind change with gust over 25knots. Add to that two opposing swells of nearly 3m bumping into each other and creating big watery hillocks making this a fuffu valve thighening situation. The change happened so fast that I did not have time to pull my trolling lines in using all my wits to keep the yak upright. Halfway home I hooked a Kahawai and had to drag it until I could land it between gusts. Aiming for port made all the wave side on and did not allow me to quarter them for a more balanced ride. My mate who was about 4kms further in was also struggling with his even narrower Stealth kayak. No tuna but definitely a character building experience for both of us. Even though it was only a 24km (nearly all paddle) my arms were nearly dropping off. Once I had a shower and a feed then I took a Voltarin pill to mask the old body pain.
