Hello I am relatively new to fishing especially Surfcasting I just brought a cheap $110 12ft shimano rod 10-15kg with N\A lure weight and reel ,with 20lb mono line, i also ended up buying a 8oz breakaway sinker. Question is would 8oz be break the line or rod ?It bends the rod a far bit more than YouTube videos lol

Cheaper rods are often made of fibreglass, or have a fibreglass component which is more forgiving than carbon, so you may get away with it. The simple solution would be to get some smaller sinkers, maybe 3 or 4oz to start with. Next job after that is to research shock leaders Smile

8oz?? where you fishing,3 oz would be my pick and get some 40lb as shock leader.twice the length of the rod worked for me.Its amzing how far a sinker will travel when broken free from line.

8oz I’m using for slidebaiting. Would seem a little heavy for general purpose breakaway sinker fishing
