Hi there,
I'm after an opinion. The last two years I've been quite happy puttering along with my 15hp on the old mac, however, it's time for an upgrade. The plate says max 25hp, but given that it's almost impossible to find a 25hp nowadays AND noticing the few new ones around are a downgraded 30hp anyway (both have 51kg) I was wondering if anyone had issues with 30hp in the back?
I skimmed through some old posts and it seems a few found cracks in their transom - I assume due to ignoring a support bracket during transport on the trailer? Or is that a tad too much torque mixed with the plastic getting a bit long in the teeth?

Let me know your experiences please.

crickets…

I've been on a new(ish) smartwave rated 25hp and owner is running a 30hp without issues. Aluminium thickness on the transom is significantly thicker though.
Guess I'll have to try

3mm. It has the battery box that takes a bit off the pressure though.

Just had a look at mine, 2017 hull with 30hp. It's 3mm aswell. Snapper Geoff has had a 30 on his for quite some time now. As far as I know, he hasn't had any issues. As you mentioned, unsupported while towing could be the cause of failure in the bracket.

Trailering mid to long distance with out motor support is a killer of most transoms.

I'll keep looking for a 30hp then and upgrade eventually. Seems like there aren't any at the dealers in the moment though.
The 20 looks nice, but it's a tad more than I'd be prepared to pour in to the boat. 20hp is only 5 more that Im using now and especially when the weather turned it's been struggling getting its arse up. With 30hp I won't have to weigh up every kg I take with me. Thanks for your help

I'd put a 30hp on one of those. Because I can trailer a lot, and I don't like to worry about stuff I'd get an engineering company or an Aluminium boat builder to weld a gusset or reinforcement on. Shouldn't cost too much if it's a simple weld.

Thanks all, seems like previous owner already riveted a gusset on (you can see in the picture it's a strip of aluminium right where the clamp foot meets the transom). I'm confident now it can handle it, just have to find one for sale now - second hand is almost impossible and dealer says there won't any in the country before end of May or so.
