Nice fish fella, the photo of it on the floor does show it looks a bit skinnier than the one you have on the wall

funny Dave, know he didn’t know he eaten one of undersized brethren, they basically eat everything going by gut contents.
Simon yeah virtually same length almost exactly as one on wall, and over 4 pound lighter. Fish are getting lighter. :-)
Smoker is going good.

Head we are using for stock, wife making fish soup. Bit of change as normally give my heads to our local restaurant for their stock.

Nice fish, smoker looks good
Those that say it can't be done are being overtaken by those doing it.

Fantastic effort. well done top fish.
You were obviously targeting something decent with huge bait and trace.
Isn't it great when a plan comes together.
Looks tasty- nice work.

Yep big bait, big hook, less little fish injured. And there are big fish to be had. My fav is large live kahawai.

I doubt this old fella was up to much on social front, probably just surviving in his nooks and crannies, maybe wrong but looked like a pensioner fish living in tiny flat (reef) was possibly boss of, as biggest snapper in his area. Hope a bigger wiser fish takes his place.

Yes brmbrm, capped off a great year, 30 kg king (back in about March) and a 22lb snapper, all this year, and from inner gulf, both within 20 minute run from where I  launch. Plus a stack of nice gurnard.
Very poor year on marlin and tuna season for me. But inshore fishing certainly made up for it. And honestly starting to enjoy and value it more.

Like your Style shaneg!! 100% correct on your reply, you run a decent sized bait the little fish don't go near them! you see guys on here straylining half pillies in the Gulf, thats just an invite to catch a small Snap. Wots more impressive to me shaneg is the number of boats your competing with in the Gulf, you target a big Snap and catch one. There wouldn't be to many around I'm guessing and wots more you have done it numerous times before, and I'm picking more in the future! Keep it up..Beer

Great catch, Shane👍
How old would that snapper be in human terms?
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken

Thanks Geoff , high praise. Most of us still in awe of fish you catch and the way you do it… small boat, big baits and big hooks, and solid penn gear. Nothing like a spinner for lobbing out a bait that makes a nice big splash.

Interesting question Roy, had to goggle answer. Maybe 35 to 40 yrs old. Guy to ask is Darren Parsons marine biologist, who used to fish with us when young under our wing in north shore surf casting club. He’s the expert on Snapper in NZ, been on telly few times.
In human terms I reckon close to 80 years old, but I am not a scientist.
My cat is about 18 years old, female, similar in behaviour to 84 year old mother in law.
