Hi all I'm looking at one of these two as a new sounder. I have a old lowrance lxc15 but the transducer has died I think. Rather than throw any more cash at this old unit. I'll buy a new sounder and use the lowrance as a chartplotter.

Any one had a good bad or ugly experience with ether?

Cheers rusty

I dont own either... I have a Humminbird Helix on my kayak
From what I have read on the kayak pages online, you want the Garmin plus, either 4 or the 5inch would be better.
A mate of mine has the Garmin plus on his kayak, comes with 300w transducer, whereas the Lowrance has a 200w transducer... have met a few who have had horror stories with the Lowrance hooks
Also, hook2 series has had a known issue with... cant remember exactly, something to do with water ingress & infeed power lead probs

Depending on your budget & if you want to keep up with new technology that is out now, try & consider getting the latest fishfinder... you wont be upgrading for years, so its money well spent now & futureproofing your gadget for the years to come
The new Gamin striker Vivids have fantastic specs on the 4inch & even better again on the 5inch (500w transducer)

I have the hook2 on my dinghy and kayak. Not a horror story here, but have to admit, I’ve never spotted a single arch on it. No clue if it’s user error or if the unit sucks (my 5” split shot unit isn’t even offered anymore). However, I’m not too fussed with it since I mostly dive and use it almost exclusively to look at contour and mark spots. I got a good deal on it and it’s a quality device, but now I’d prob go for a mid-range garmin. my 2cent,
