To all

On those cold winter days when you can't go fishing, here are a couple of my favourite subs:

Gareth (Taupo, but does some South Island and USA trips)

Alex  (Also Taupo but fishes South Island too, including unusual areas like Karamea)

They used to fish together but I haven't seen that for a while.  Gareth has the longest history but he's been AWOL a bit this year.  Gareth has a great sense of humour, and isn't worried about showing shots where he falls down a bank or takes a bath, or drops 4 or 5 hookups in a row.  Both of them do amazing drone shots, including the occasional one where they "lock" the drone and film a hookup from above.

Both fish impossibly long (17 to 18 foot) leaders/tippets, which seems to help with their nymphing.  I would end up in a helluva tangle.

For those who hate commercialism, be prepared for advertising/plugging of products they like, urging you to like/subscribe - the usual, not too intrusive.

They both tend to put a new post up every Wednesday.

Feel free to add your faves.

Interesting, Geoff.

I enjoy both of those guys too.

Interesting that Gareth recently decided not to name the Taupo tributaries he's fishing on in a particular vid, which I think is a bit pointless - they are so recognisable to any NZer after decades of books, magazines and film footage, and international anglers can't get there anyway...
Totally get it in terms of the back country rivers.

I subscribe to MikeFsher (beautiful South Island footage) and On The Fly NZ (a lot of Tongariro stuff, though hasn't posted for 5 months).

of course Crazy About Fly Fishing, from Forum member Johan, who's doing a good job of a mix of salt and fresh water.

And Troutboynz used to be a great channel, featuring spectacular footage of Otamangakau especially. Used to be one of my favourite spots when I lived further south and could get there and back on long summer days.

Here's Gareth Bayliss, a Taupo-based guide, but fishing the South Island somewhere around Twizel?

Whole buncha stunning big fish, some over 20lbs.

That latest vid from Gareth is pretty epic. Puts my opening day efforts to shame!

interesting, Geoff. It's the Ohau River, which was opened up early for the first time to allow people to target the giant spawners up from the canal - hence the ragged tails and weird jaws of some of them, and the schools of fish visible on the drone footage.

While Gareth deliberately didn't name the river - particularly in his vids on the same river last year - another YouTube channel Pure Fly NZ recently named it in their title...

Gareth's latest in the same series was fly fishing nymphs/eggs in one of the canals, and getting some monsters - whereas most other vids of that area are with spin gear rolling eggs or softbaits.

A strange fishery, but absolutely giant fish.
