Boy I must be privileged. Let me describe how much:
1) I’m so privileged that I had both parents at home while I was growing up.
2) I am so privileged that my Father did not beat me up if he came home drunk.
3) I am so privileged that my Father never came home drunk.
4) I am so privileged that my Parents encouraged me to do well at school.
5) I am so privileged that I went to school every day, on time, and stayed at school all day, unless I was actually sick.
6)
I am so privileged that I went to University for 5 years and worked my
arse off because I wanted to do well and could not stand the thought of
being a “Failed Student” when I was solely responsible for my own
success or failure.
8) I am so privileged that after having failed
some of my first year courses I worked extra hard to pass them the
second time when I had to repeat them in my second year along with
everything else in my second year which I also passed, Just.
7) I am so privileged that I saved my money and made sure I could pay my bills no matter what I had to do without.
8) I am so privileged that I did not put myself in stupid situations that were likely to see my running foul of the police.
9) I am so privileged that I chose friends that would be there for me like I would there for them.
10)
I am so privileged that I put myself in position to take advantage of
opportunities, even though they had risk attached, I backed myself to
get through.
11) I am so privileged that I ground it out when it did get tough and never gave up, or make excuses.
Oh, by the way did any of the above 11 points mention my race or my gender?

those descriptions can only be applied to a person of European descent. That is, "white". Does not matter your ethnical makeup. Espec if the parents are not NZ born.If you spend time with Asian and other families, you will find that their sense of hard work, not doing dumb stuff, respect,etc..All fall very well into all of the above... They will, privately, often be very critical of NZ born families (parents/ grandparents NZ born) These ppl, just like Asian and, middle east etc, move to a new country to provide a better life for their children and eventually grandchildren, so make a big deal of these standards. But as the generations go down the 'memories ' of the 'old countries ' the respect, hard work, work ethics, then to go out the window. We often see snippets of this when 2nd/ 3rd/ 25th/30th generations, of NZ born ppl move to other countries oversea for a better life...even when they have had a crap life here or not Race, culture etc is not part of the equation. |

And when its not, it is someone else's fault. Nothing to do with their choices. We are breeding a culture of entitlement. Which simply leads to discontent when it is not met. I feel very lucky and thank the things that got me here regularly. Having said that I worked my A off thru years of Uni for the education I wanted, and worked my A off during holidays to support myself. I took risks (risked everything financially - make or break) and worked my A off setting myself up for a future. Years without a day off - literally. I feel very lucky - to have the life I have. But you have to make your own luck. Alan |
