fly line question

Hey guys, I’m just getting set up for getting into some saltwater fly fishing. I’ve just brought a 9wt rod and reel and now I need to buy some fly line.so my question is what sort of   Fly line should I buy? I will be manly fishing for kahawai around Canterbury’s river mouths so would a sinking tip fly line be best or will a Intermediate line do the trick? Thanks

Yep, a line with a clear intermediate tip would be my choice. You can get them with either a nine foot inter tip or a 15 foot inter tip. I would imagine that the nine foot version would suit you best in a rivermouth environment.

Thanks for that, I will look at getting a intermediate line then.Also would you recommend me using a sinking leader or will a fluorocarbon leader do the job?

I would just use flourocarbon and a weighted fly i.e. a clouser. I fish off a local wharf for kahawai with that set-up. Just let the fly sink to the bottom and then rip it back fast.

Good call Craig.  

Although I wouldn't use fluorocarbon personally.  That stuff has a half life, so if/when lost will be in the environment for 100's of years to come.  At least nylon breaks down after time, plus its cheap.
