Got this very beautiful Gulf king this arvo on a very large Kahawai livebait.  Scales bottomed out at 60lb.
Put a up a very strong fight but eventually the ugly stick heavy jig rod  and penn fathom 25n stardrag did the job with 80 lb braid and 120 lb trace.

That's a better pic.  The one alongside the boat on the Auckland Yakkers forum doesn't do it justice.  Nice fish Thumbs Up

yeah FA wife took this one, and definitely better shot and on the water. My mate’s son took the other one when we got home, and fish was so slippery I couldn’t hold it straight.

Thanks for congrats fellas. Main thing showing here is with fish like that is if it has to die which this did as was hooked deep. We waste none, including taking cheeks off last night when tired and cutting all head parts out. Some of best parts for us , plus all scraps for cat.
Have shared a lot of fish to mainly very appreciative friends.
Clay and Steve, there are few bigger kings around if you want run bigger kahawai baits ... and we get them even close to bays sometimes this time of year as you probably know.
Thanks Al and Roy and others for kind comments. Makes my dismal marlin season very palatable getting some excellent kings down here close to where we  live and launch.

Great call, Steps.Clap

I somehow missed this post earlier, big congrats Shane. I respect how - like Johnny W - you have obviously put in the time and effort to learn the fishery, know your gear and your chosen methods intimately, and get the results!
