Hopefully the small beginnings of a lot more to come :-
It doesn't happen often - delighted
to report that as of the 17th Feb the RDR has moved t
o surrender the additional
water take of 10 cumec from the Rangitata River.
The NZ Salmon Anglers, SC Salmon
Anglers and the Future Rivers Trust joined forces to appealed this in 2018, it
was a big effort, in the end we agreed to settle with some pretty decent gains.
Iwi interests continued their appeal, delayed further by Covid, and recently
announced, the water take has now been surrendered, ending the drawn out
proceedings - and a great result!!
They say timing is everything, had
we not appealed it's likely this would have progressed too far to be able to
mothballed it this stage. So I believe it's fair to claim our group played a
significant roll in this result.
Regardless it's a win for anglers,
the river and all of NZ, and hopefully a sign of more to come as the government
resets our water rules
Our appeal group only succeeded
because of the financial support we received from anglers, so thank you to all of
our supporters who contributed in various ways. Every sale from the shop
contributes to the funding of the Future Rivers Trust, so all of our customers
have helped, so thank you!
There is much more work to do, both
the salmon and sea-run trout fisheries on the river remain in crisis, as do most
east coast fisheries, our group has applied to Ecan for a statutory plan to be
applied to the river. The NZ Salmon Anglers remain staunch advocates for our
rivers and are doing some great work on fish screens and flows. And we continue
to work for more gains through our various channels
When you cry, feel pain or sadness, no one notices your sorrow .... BUT
fart just ONE time !!!!!!!!!!!
