"A major search and rescue operation is underway after a mayday call was received from a sinking yacht earlier this evening.

A distress call was received via maritime radio at about 6.30pm tonight giving the yacht’s location as near Waiheke."

Real or bored school kids?

"The search for a missing yacht continues today, with the Royal New Zealand Navy’s HMNZS Te Kaha still searching east of Coromandel near Great Mercury Island."

Pauanui / Waiheke long way apart. To not give name of vessel nor position really says the person using the radio had no idea at all. I wish them luck if it is for real.

It is about time, 'all boat owner's ' were made to obtain a proficiency licence for the use of boat and radio, for any waterway, which must be shown on demand, no licence, boat confiscated. Just so many idiots out on the water with know idea at all.

When I dis the CG radio course the presenter said that once the school holidays start the distress calls sky rocket presumably due to kids
playing on dads' boat & often give themselves away by the giggles in the background, but unfortunately until proven otherwise all calls have to be considered genuine.

Guess the same applies during lock down & we were still at level 3 yesterday when the call was made ...... hmnn ?

Just read this,

MISSING YACHT FOUND
The yacht missing off the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula has been found and both people on board are believed safe.
Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) began coordinating the search yesterday evening after a brief and partial Mayday call was received.
Senior Search and Rescue Officer, Chris Henshaw, said that a short time ago a vessel advised that it was the one that had broadcast the Mayday call.
RCCNZ is standing down the search aircraft and vessel.

Yes Te Kaha was looking. Sea was pretty crap apparently - didn't want to send smaller boats.
They revised the search area away from waiheke and off Coromandel when Waiheke was drawing a blank and they realised if they transposed two digits of the Lat/Long cords relayed, they had a new search area. Top job by S&R.

"The yacht, Tribe, which broadcast a Mayday call yesterday evening was found this afternoon in Bream Bay about 4 nautical miles (7km) south of Whangarei.

That is about 80 nautical miles (150km) north of where it made its Mayday call.

A Maritime NZ staff member expects to meet Tribe’s skipper tomorrow to discuss what happened and what lessons can be learned from the incident."

Big smile

There is a facility for us to broadcast our location from the radio, if it is hooked up to the chart plotter, although I'm unsure if the system is supported in nz.
I would like to see that system expanded to continue to broadcast the position automatically for several hours after the initial distress sent from the radio, providing the radio is still on.
Of course, epirbs are the best option.
you can't fix an idiot with duct tape, but it does muffle them for a while...

Yep - thats what EPIRBs were made for. So.... did the yacht in distress have an EPIRB? Maybe not. Why not?

Sorry, but I have to say what a Dick the skipper must have been.  I completely understand the need to make a mayday call, but to then disregard the VHF after making the call, while knowingly sailing a considerable distance from the location is simply inexcusable.   At the very least he should have handed the radio to one of his party to inform authorities of their situation.

As the rescue coordinator stated

“If you make a Mayday call and the situation changes for the better, then make another radio call to cancel the Mayday. You will be thanked for the cancellation and no one will be critical or angry.

“If you’ve activated a beacon and are no longer in danger, then make sure you leave the beacon on until you are contacted by rescuers.

“If you turn it off, we have the position you were at but no way of knowing if you have moved or what has happened.”

Plain common sense really!
