A family’s costly reminder to be well-prepared

A family recently learnt the hard way the value of getting a professional pre-purchase inspection before buying a boat and of always carrying two forms of waterproof communication.

When doing their own inspection and brief test runs of the 30+-year-old 5.5-metre fibreglass boat they were buying, the family noted repairs and patches on the hull, but overall it seemed seaworthy.

The following week, on a fine day, the three adults and two young children made a trip to a nearby island. On their return, water started filling the boat’s stern. The skipper checked the bungs were all still in place, but the water continued to rapidly fill the boat. Within 90 seconds the boat sank and rolled over, revealing a large split in the hull.

All adults and children were confident swimmers and wore lifejackets, but their mobile phones got lost in the panic and the fixed VHF radio sank with the boat, so they couldn't send a distress message. Fortunately, other boats were nearby, came to the rescue, and all five were quickly recovered and taken to shore.

The skipper says he learnt to not take things for granted when going boating, despite having grown up around the water and his close relationship with the ocean. He also says, "in hindsight, the relatively small cost of a professional inspection before buying a boat may save your life down the road".

While no one was seriously injured, the boat was lost and the family had to cover the significant costs of salvage and disposal. They also took away some clear messages:

  • always carry two forms of waterproof communication (having a handheld VHF radio would have allowed them to call for help in the water)
  • always use a waterproof bag for your mobile phone
  • carry out a professional pre-purchase inspection before buying a boat
  • making sure everyone wears a lifejacket at all times should always be part of your plan.
  • The boat's hull split as the boat was being recovered, highlighting its poor condition

Bit of an unusual boat by the looks of it. Personally I'd be wary of anything heavily modified.
And yeah, if you don't know what to look for, get help.
you can't fix an idiot with duct tape, but it does muffle them for a while...

Big onus on the POS who sold a non seaworthy boat to a guy with a family.
I bet the buyer mentioned it was to take his kids out and the seller still sold it as seaworthy.

Happened to me about 20 yrs ago and i took the prick to court and won.Bogged and sandpapered a transom that has huge rotton areas and sold it knowingly, got the wife to admit it and taped it.https://static.cloudflareinsights.com/beacon.min.js" data-cf-beacon="{"rayId":"5fa2f25759e6ee9e","version":"2020.11.6","si":10}">
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in your tent.

Or even by it in the 1st place.. looks like some sort of OLD unknown or home built hull, that has had a lot of backyard additions , and add to that a new paint job.

My ist rule of thumb, and have mentioned many times here, If buying an older hull, never buy on thats been painted.. buy something you can see all the old war wounds.
Even thu this looked like had been patched in the past, if done right becomes stronger than the rest of the hull.
Done wrong , no better than putting  cheap Chinese duct tape over the damage.

Even thu did not get a survey, It seems to me the buyer didnt even get someone actually familiar with fiberglass , or FB boats to go over it.
