Al,
One of your best links.

I spent time reading numerous insight articles.
Pretty disappointed I never came across this before.

A very intelligent fisherman.
One of the best I've read from any country.

This should be a go to for most fisherman.
I suggest all who are interested in reasoned understanding of their craft or interest should put this on there homepage.

thanks Al.
Just cruising in my now sweetas pimped out Southern 755 HT0!

You can't deny the science of narrow thickness, smoothness and barb size for best penetration.
During my early years of fly fishing, my club had a guest speaker who was an advocate of barbless hooks. He set a hook into a piece of foam and showed that the hook would have to be pulled backwards to unhook it. Now trout do jump and a barbless hook will still stay hooked.
Even in game fishing the same is true - I remember Peter Pakula saying that barbless is best for marlin fishing but no one would buy a barbless marlin hook. I file down the barbs on my marlin hooks but still have one.
Going barbless on a recurve hook is a no-brainer (makes it much easier to remove when you hook yourself, too!!)
Excellent site - thanks.

Good stuff alright. Never ceases to amaze me that people who spend tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on a boat/gear are happy to fish with blunt, rusty hooks 😀

Yes, Peter P said to always reduce the size of your barb, even on his hooks. Said they caught more fishers than fish with the size that was produced :)

What this article seems to elide over is that a hook that has fully penetrated (and preferably in the corner of the mouth a la circle hooks, or front of mouth a la small softbait jigheads) holds by its curve, and that needs very little strength in the wire of the hook, since the pull is all straight.

You only need strength in the hook if it's holding by its point end.

That's why barbless circle hooks hold so well, and why thin-gauge circle hooks hook up best; also why softbait jigheads with thin gauge wire hooks outfish jigheads with bigger gauge wire.

Haven't read the article yet - but looks like I shall.
These are what I have been using for gamefishing for last couple of years. The skirt took a mahi a couple of days ago and both hooks were fully embedded - wasn't going anywhere. The circle is what I use for livebaits. Lightest gauge I have found so far. Only make them up to 10/0 - but seems enough for most species.
Before using light hooks I test them in the garage first - using my drag scales and see how much they want to deform.

The last sentence is something I am trying at the moment. Going out every 2nd trip no bait or just a little bit, using SB,s .Might try those metal lure things with skirts one day.Theroy being litle or no undersize and hopefully catch 2 or 3 bigger fish instead of taking limit of limit size.less fish but same kiloage??

Will be interesting to see how you get on. I switched to softbaits years ago and now only use softies and metal jigs.

Less mess to clean up, generally avoid undersized fish, better fun using light tackle, no mucking about with anchoring and I found lure fishing to be generally more successful.

I was using the light bulb jig heads for a while but I’ve changed back to the jig star jig heads light wire strong hooks. The mustard darter heads are good as well.
