Hi there, my 10year old son, pretty new to fishing, wants to fish from shore line or wharf (or somewhere from land not on a boat) in the Mangawhai Heads area.  Any recommendations?

For a ten year old I would suggest fishing a straight shank number 6 hook (Gamakatsu baitholders are perfect) above a sinker on a short dropper rig for parore in the harbour holes. Use pipis as bait. There are plenty of big parore in the river and some nice deep holes down by the heads.

Kids like catching fish, so don't set targets too high. As FishMan says, parore are a good place to start. There are many other species around wharves that can easily be caught too.

I've a spare beginners kayak and paddle (no spare PFD sorry) he's welcome to use and keep at yours. Catching small kahawai in the estuary is fun for kids of all ages :-)
