As most of you will have noticed or not,
We now have the lowest value of ads permeating our environment.
Accidentally press the screen in the wrong place and we have sex from any country.

I get times are hard for now, but a forum that's a commercial formula that will do anything to survive or ensure it's original commercial imperatives, or maybe 'tis was the plan to build a product for future sale.

I get the commercial imperatives, but I struggle with it riding or progressing clandestine on the back of an open community involvement.

Do the moderators get paid.
Do the contributors get a hand out.
Of course not.
But this forum survives on the back of the fisherman who are involved because of fishing and boating and fervently contribute.

So I'm asking does this sit well for you or do,you have an opinion.

Get a bigger screen to reduce the likelyhood of accidentally clicking on an unwanted ad??

Perhaps a good question directed at the owner, Matt.

The advertisers/sales pay an amount to Fishnet.

The mods are volunteers, a bit like Citizens Advice Bureau, they are there to help, but have rules and guidance to follow and encourage. Otherwise as a public forum there becomes too much freedom of speech where such things as racialism, discrimination, bad taste, anti-everything squad, religious fanatics, political activists, conflict of interest and much more... Even many Mods are lesser these days.

Contributors are not paid just part of the fishing community to promote recreational fishing in NZ. We used to have regular overseas contributors, which was interesting as they told great tales and shared their adventures and vast experiences, sadly they have faded away.

As have many forum members and characters.

Other social media platforms have won many ex forum members. Facebook being a big one with lots of NZ fishing pages.

Is it up to us, yourself, et-al to keep it all going?

The survival of forums such as this is down to the quality of the contributors. Interesting and topical subjects being discussed sensibly with no personal attacks or belligerent repetitiveness. Humour, joviality, all help to create a place people look forward to visiting.
The is a reality that it costs money to provide and maintain this site, I don't mind some advertising... Provided I don't start getting emails offering me enlargement pills...
you can't fix an idiot with duct tape, but it does muffle them for a while...

Fnet don't choose all of the ads. Some of them are forum sponsors etc, yes, but for other ones they embed an ad "frame" and then an advertising middle-person (probably Google?) puts various ads in there for a tiny tiny amount per view; if they get clicks then Fnet probably gets a little bit more.

Worth mentioning that those ads will be customised via tracking cookies etc, so if you're being served up sex ads then that's what the algorithms have decided you want to see.... may want to use an incognito window next time you're on the more risque parts of the internet

I set up/coded kakariki.net , originally as kakariki.sytes.net back last century.
Was on a intel P2 win 98 machine, and ran on std home/office connection of 64kb.
Google ads came along, considered could make a bit money here, beyond the cost of updating server to a old gaming machine, every 10 to 15yrs and annual costs of re newing the web site registration and DNS stuff.. under $80.

Several yrs ago I closed new membership simply because the same questions where being asked over and over, and they breeders around the world who answered these questions  , like my self just got bored...or rather " use the damn search button or the "Quick Search " block on left each page.
So the server sits at my feet hosting several web sites, and kakariki is now a reference for those who are not too damn lazy to use the search functions.
The car club and couple other web sites are kept upto day
They cover  their site registration costs, I maintain it all for free... which is basically just check it is on the web every few days.

Still no ads..  I hate adds..
 Fish.net  is a bit different.
Yep has the same basic volunteer format, but professional coders, professional hosts etc.
Then as it is an extension/part of of Fishing News, it has a commercial interest.. by owners and 'sponsors' etc which means adverts,
Many are adverts of professional experts who are also members and supporters, often small business and hobbyists, to small and bigger charter guys.
And yeah their contribution to info in these forums is huge..

No I dont mind the ads
I dont get any pop ups.. the coders, admins here actually do a damn good job.
The index drop down across the top is sometimes annoying.
The ads on the right could be a little narrower.
The top ads are good , the bottom non fishing are questionable.. but bread and butter stuff.
No, cant rem the last time I accidently clicked an ad.

In saying that I dont use my phone or tablet for hardly any internet  forum , social media stuff....
I have a desktop.. next to the web/mail/ftp server.. with a proper screen and keyboard. This gets accessed in moments of MY spare time (not the employers or customers) over a coffee once , maybe twice a day

So I see ads a necessary evil ( like a boss is.. he signs the pay check at the end of the week).

And what BIG Dave says... except the last sentence... I could understand how that maybe a problem.

If have pop ups and stuff.. the issue will be as others above suggest.

Sadly, I don't think forums have a great future. It's a pattern repeated over and over again due to the effect of Facebook etc. Traffic on this forum is very light. At some point it won't make commercial sense to keep it going.

Which is a great shame; information lives a lot longer on these forums, especially if people use the search (or search using Google). Anything on Facebook is gone within a couple of hours on the popular groups.

That it may be. I enjoy plenty of the content on there and links to mates far and wide. Right now, the positives are outweighing the negatives. Lots of mates are shifting to Instagram but that seems such a vain platform...

Facebook was built to take advantage of smart phone technology and that is why it is so successful. Most people use phones to access the internet nowadays because they are so portable and  ... ummm smart.

Fb sometimes appears to lack quality content simply because there is so much content.  Post up a pic of a fish asking for an ID and you will get 10 comments saying it's a dead one. Hilarious stuff, but the technology of smart phones opens access to millions of people and there a lots of one liner replies and comments that lack substance - no one want's to write their life story using a phone.

I'm not saying that FB pages are rubbish, far from it but there is a lot of junk there too. You could say the same about the political stuff that clutters up our fishing site.

Of course that's my opinion and maybe it's all because of masonic interference.

But Smudge - fishing has politics interwoven into it too. Hard to separate it.
Parties taking money from Fishing Co's, political promises - cameras on boats etc,, the state of our fishery, prohibition on fishing during Lockdown.......etc.
I am in regular correspondence with MPI currently - over the state of our local fishery. They are being helpful and providing what data/info they have. And it is not very rosy.
But at the end of the day, politics will be what determines the outcome for the fish.

Interesting responses.
I see the ads because I use an iPad so I can read easily without bl....dy glasses which I hats wearing.

No girls on offer, catch of the day is all I can take in, the fish keep me calm.

I've always admired the effort the moderators put in. Can't imagine the sheer time put in.

Fb, not me.

No forums like these are as mentioned above filling the niche for those who fish, boat and like good communication , involvement, support and offers of support, insights and experiences.

I genuinely want to see places like these survive.

Not so long ago "smudge" there was 2 new sections created because of 2 posters posting political matters and fishing management matters.  As it was deemed not nessacary to clog up The Briny Bar.
Possibly thats where should of gone with "covid19" but seeing how no fishing was happening at the time guess it was ok??

But now we basically have one active moderator you cannot be on here all the time moderatingSmile

Yes guilty as charged.

For what its worth I really enjoy the forum exactly how it is. Yes There are alot of topics that are not fishing related, but we all have lives as well and not all of us are out there doing it 7 days a week unless you are TT of course.
There seems to be fairly varied points of view which I find interesting.... and anyone who drops a bombshell has to basically put up a link to verify there info is a great way of weeding out the sh.t talkers etc.
On the subject of pop up adds..... 2 weeks ago I went to miter 10 mega Albany to by a new sensor outdoor light. I didnt google anything before hand- Just went in, found one and brought it.
The next time I used my PC I had pop up adds for outdoor lights coming at me for days.... How is that possible? coincidence?
