Wowsers 70% of jobs in Auckland still on subsidy and thousands to lose them.

Could have been so very different.

Agree, the crime rate hopefully will not be directly proportional to job losses but it is sure to rise as there is a lot of pain out there now in some sectors.

Can't we just summarize all of this by saying New Zealand as we once knew it will soon be gone.
Call me pessimistic, negative or whatever. Tell everyone about how NZ isn't so bad compared to some sh*t hole on the other side of the world. Doing so will solve all of our problems in the country we live in.
Think 2020 has been interesting so far, wait and see...

Hang on, everywhere I travel around the waikato and Bop, everyone is flat out. ..my son who usually sweeps floors at this time of the year is flat out fitting out new boats and doing repowers.
Another son is flat out fitting bull bars and lift kits etc...this is all discretion spending...
Electricians are flat out. .
I'm not seeing this horror story unfolding..

The service sector will be taking the first big hit.

Might take a year or two before trades see it.

Then when everything is rogered and our debt level is through the roof the boos will ring out when National is back and implementing austerity measures and that is when the government sector gets hit hard.

It is what happens when socialist confetti money hand outs go out of control. Happened under Blair in the UK.

I have an issue I need to sort with MSD. I am in a queue to speak to someone.
Been waiting a week so far, and as of Y/day, no one can tell me when I might get to speak to someone. Days? weeks? They simply don't know.
That is an indication of what is happening behind the scenes. The rest is a cardboard cut out front.

I agree. I am in the BoP too. I was out for a curry with 20 tradies yesterday. Sparkies, builders, plumbers etc. They are all flat out non stop after a minor hickup after lockdown. My son is an apprentice sparkie. The place he works was slow to kick start but busy now too.

The service industry, all the bars, cafes, pubs etc around here are booming. I can't see this doom and gloom and ruin that everyone is talking about. Obviously there are individual stories and hardships, but I am not seeing it on a large community sized scale.

A few months ago, the naysayers were comparing us to Australia, saying how much better they were managing it all (even though they were losing jobs everywhere - my family are in Melbourne). Now people are saying stop comparing us to other places in the world. It is really all we can do. The virus is global, so comparing our situation to other countries is the best indicator for how well or badly we are doing.

I feel lucky to be here.

I agree with Muppet on this one. Its not all going to happen overnight or right now.
I do find it funny though people using the old "my mates are real busy" argument but then basically writing off people doing it hard, "oh i'm sure someone is"  selective much.
Of course tradies working on local projects are not going to be effected as much. The nature of the work/ industry and planning of projects means it will be a while until they are effected. I'm saying that from first hand experience.
As far as bars and restaurants, there's already a bunch gone/going under in Hamilton that i know of.
How's the tourism sector and export businesses doing...
To use the Australian example too..... ok what percentage of their GDP have they spent throughout this mess vs NZ...
That tells you all you need to know about who's going to be hit harder in the long run.
I've got a mate who owns a business in Perth and he's well up on this time last year and has been though out the whole thing. Take that as you will though. A few personal examples of businesses doing well isn't sh*t in the scope of a whole nation.
Just because someone somewhere in another country is doing it worse doesn't mean your problems no longer exist. We all know some in other countries have it worse, no one is saying that's not the case.

My previous posts weren't even about the economy.
We've lost a lot more as a nation than a bit of money this year.
Seems that point is lost on many.

I agree on that Fishy11 it is not all about money but attitude....

As for money though took a full year for the GFC to bite my old company.
Who by the way are doing four days a week and getting paid for four days
That hurts my old workmates.

In London during the blitz there was a very common phrase used. "Don't you know there is a war on." I think it needs to be updated to "Don't you know there is a Pandemic on."

MM - I took your advice and sent an email to a very generic MSD address - best I could find. But my issue is not seriously time critical - as many may be.
The point I was making was the MSD system appears dysfunctional right now - impossible to get through to who you need to. That has to be a reflection of what is going on at another level. They are overwhelmed basically.
Agree with Muppets earlier post and Fishy11.
We are just starting down this long road. WHO now saying brace yourself for the next decade. I seriously hope the Govt doesn't continue propping up random businesses that have dim prospects. Far better to invest the money elsewhere that having a sector dependant on zombie businesses. And you can only spend it once.

Yeah most places are very busy, usually this time of the year I can get my boat motor serviced within a couple of days from booking, never seen so many boats waiting in a packed workshop.Lots of new motors being fitted.    I personally dont know any one that has lost there job. Heard on TV that new car sales are way up this year in July compared to last year. The doom and gloom some portray doesnt stack up.
A Good Skipper Keeps the water on the outside of the boat.

A lot of companies are now paying back the covid wage subsidies now that they find that they didn't need them - and good on them.

But what happened to that 50 Million paid to Maori because the were supposedly more susceptible to potential infections in a pandemic - it just didn't happen with much lower or non-existent affection rates  ... are they now going to pay it back or has it been consumed?

It would take some big balls in government to insist its paid back.

Begs the question overall then does it not?

If everything is hunky dory why is 70% of workers in Auckland still claiming the subsidy?
And why the hell are we racking up billions in national debt?
It has been a full three months since L4 ended.
