Have fished recently with a couple of guys ( Alan is one ) who maintain the only setup they ever use when nymph fishing is a truck & trailer rig consisting of a weighted bead head then a relatively tiny point fly.
 
It certainly seems to work well in most locations where a normal setup
using a normal size fly proves to be less effective however having said that it would seem a normal size nymph works well enough in other nearby locations ... why ... is it because natural food source nymphs vary in size in different locations.
 
Am told one of the downsides in using a small nymph is the hook is often more difficult to get to set in the trouts' jaw.
 
To overcome this is there any valid reason for not using a larger hook on a smaller fly & in particular a lighter thinner dry fly hook.

Just give it a go trying to tie a small fly on a larger hook than required for the fly size and you will soon see. Hook size needs to match the fly size to make it semi-realistic.

Also generally your using the truck and trailer rig as the bigger fly has the weight to get deep enough to the fish, while the smaller fly lacks density to get down. The bigger fly is just being used as a sinker in effect.

I accept the points you make Frazer but surely any hook incorporated in the construction of a fly is alien to the realistic representation of a natural.
 
As for the heavier fly acting as a sinker ... true enough but surely that applies regardless of the size of the point fly & after all the fish is the final judge, a fact often illustrated by the fact the weighted fly is some
times the one taken presumably by preference.

Yeah sure, like monster 4wd mud tyres don't look out of place on an MX5 😁😁

I use Gamakatsu SW fly hooks on small skippie lures and get good results - maybe not a similar comparison, though.
