Just wondering if there are two types of boaties? First there is myself just cruising to my fishing spots twenty something knots and nicely trimmed motor for fuel economy or the other type where I'm just the passenger and the motor is WOT and not ever trimmed and I'm thinking shouldn't have brought my lifejacket, shudda brung a parachute.

Which one are you?  Smile

I'm pretty chilled, even on a jetski. I don't open it up unless it's flat (and safe). My fishing buddy on the other hand, only has two settings on his boat throttle, idle and WOT.

I have a mate that shouldn't own a boat. Keen as , enough money to get in to trouble, but I am nervous every time I get on the boat. And he gets real nervous as soon as the sea gets over 0.5 m.
I have beach launched in challenging conditions for 30 + yrs, no issues. 3500 rpm is about as far as I push my motor. makes no sense to do more. Optimum speed for motor and hull.

Time and a place for each. Mostly I'm a 20kn cruiser. But if it's just young(ish) fullas on the boat and we need to be somewhere to catch the tide or something I'll give it the jandle and hang on real good.

when i shared a ski boat with my brotheryears ago we used to joke about it - he had 2 speeds off or on - i have always been more flexible will go flat out occasionally in perfect conditions usually drive at comfortable speed.   Going flat out all the time sucks gas whether 2 or 4 Stroke, more so 2S.
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

I've always found 20kn a comfortable cruising speed, it's rare that I need to be anywhere quicker.

Have a very well powered boat WoT is just under 50 mph  and fast cruise on flat water around 37/38 mph.

I like a speed where we can talk (2S engine) and the hull doesnt come crashing down with a thump..at all, regardless of the sea conditions.
Under perfect conditions .. Waiheke channel on a good day or Waikato river cruise around 32/ 34 mph  the swells of the west coast .. only go when max maybe 1.5m  usually 1m or less.. good day will be about 24 mpg  ave day 22 mph, bit choppy 19/20 mph.
Rpms dont go over about 4300

Aim is  the hull never crashes, thumps down, thumb on the trim button most of the time eyes on the water..

The reality is that few skippers are aware that passengers are significantly more affected than they are due the fact they have a steering wheel etc. to steady themselves with, plus being in control are in a position to anticipate wave size & direction allowing them to prepare accordingly ... an advantage not afforded to passengers.

Therefore skippers may think they are providing a comfortable ride however that is often not the case for their passengers.

As someone who is mechanically inclined, understanding engines and stresses, I know that the more you ask of an engine ie. WOT, the less it will last, same as the hull, bang crash thump equals slow damage occurring to the hull..
Then there is the pleasure and welfare of my passengers, give them a pleasant ride, and they will come back for more.
I have never had money to burn, so economy was also a factor, keep it in the economical range..
Lastly, I'm not in a rush, sit back, cruise, enjoy..

Admittedly with my last motor upgrade, I do enjoy the odd race..
Heading back to the ramp after the last grunter hunter, was an all out drag race, and I sat on 75kmh for most of it.. my son nonchalantly hanging on to the Bimini to stop it blowing away..

I also have one of those mates, dosent matter what he drives, who he scares or makes sick, it's pedal,to the metal..his loss of licence over the years is testament to it..and up at the beach, we hear him coming, boom, bang..as his boat bounces off the trailer..
you can't fix an idiot with duct tape, but it does muffle them for a while...

No where hatched.. excellent source...Justanotherspero was telling me abut it the other day...

And  naively  unaware that certain ladies parts are painful in even smaller chop..even days later. hence why the stop going out

most of the time we cruise 22-25knots. I’m an engine guy and the engine sounds and feels happiest at 2800-3000 revs or so. Fuel economy is pretty much flat from 18-30 knots so that isn’t much of a consideration.

On a calmer day 28-30 and WOT for a few minutes every so often (I don’t maybe every 5 trips or so) to make sure she revs out to peak revs (diesel). With the family I try to focus on ride comfort so will come down to 16-18 in a decent chop and can even plane at 13 if needed with a bit of tab

Don’t like to just bash through like some

It is difficult to compare 'habits'.. the type of boat/ launch.. planing or displacement, the weight or length of the hull and the power on the back.. or in the middle of the boat.

Advising those with bad backs, or large female wobbly bits, to sit down the back can help..

There have been times, when in my judgement, it has been better to keep the bow down, and go for it for 10 min, instead of bouncing and banging all the way home for the next half an hour..skip across the tops..

Dunno about that..my back is not the best after a major brake few yrs back, legs dont work well etc.
Sit while moving not good at all.. hell just sitting is not good..
And lady body parts means  not holding onto and hand rails to support more.. sitting or standing.
