Thanks Paul.

Didn't want to say that.
Yes I was undergunned.
Inline circle I think an 8.

I made a poor choice.
I was thinking gun shy fish so grabbed in haste a 100 lb unit.
Been fine on Marlin upto 100 kg.
I realise now this fish is a different fighter.

Still doesn't explain why it didn't stick.
Hook still in good shape.

Are you thinking gape.

We used hapuka circle hooks,  nothing fancy, not to sure of the size.  strike 15kg so it was very solid, hook pointexposed,  fight 17kg. but that was YFT.

Possible with the hook size was hooked too close to the corner and tore out?
I prefer 10's. Have used 12's.

A lot of what I'm thinking now points to a gape to small.

With a circle hook, and hooked up, it has to have had a proper bite - ie pierced the fish. They are good at that. So to pull free, it really comes down to tearing its way out?

True that.

But after some time gorging on info I have a better awareness.
