The Hauraki Gulf Forum - made up of council, government and tāngata whenua representatives - also voted at a meeting this week to work to restore 1000 square kilometres of shellfish beds and reefs which have been destroyed by decades of plunder.
We can be very quick to blame the commercial sector..who in the most part, like recs, work withing the legal limits.
Legal limits set by Who? the government..the law makers..
Bottom line this is a 100% reflection on "decades of (legalised) plunder"
So why not call it just that.. in the headlines..

Also keep in mind, due to a supreme court ruling back in the 80s from memory the treaty of Waitangi is exclusively a contract between Maori and the crown.. it doesn't include the rest of the population..therefore rec fishers, technically and legally are out of consideration.. At the end of the day, regardless, we have all known that one day large sections of our coast line WILL NEED to be closed to all due to BS legislation and the law makers decades..no over 70+ yrs of failures. |
