Looking at one and know nothing about them, anyone got any advice about them. Grab it or dodge it...

SWB 3 door
5 spd manual
6 cylinder
2.8 litre turbo diesel
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in your tent.

I am not sure about the 2.8 turbo I had a 4.1 NA which is a built proof motor
The dash display/guages are a real common fault in these and it is not a simple fix, most auto electrical guys have given up on them.
They are just getting old and you are relying a lot on second hand parts from specialist wreckers to keep them going.
The diff blew up on mine I guess it was from towing a 8 mtr boat every weekend but I didn't expect that to happen.
I liked it because it was real testosterone machine but it was a headache keeping it roadworthy.
Cheers Brendon

Have had the pleasure of owning 3
1988 4.2 N/A
1995 2.8 TD
1994 4.2 TD

If you are towing, I didn't like the 2.8 TD - at the time we were towing a 2150 Rayglass.

The 2.8TD didn't have a lot of grunt so needed to use 4 low to push the boat up the hill and drive into its parking spot. The old 4.2 had no such issues...

Speedo went on my first one. (Although I'm pretty sure it had been wound back).

Those are all Diesels i am assuming ?  Much difference tween the manuals or the autos for reliability, towing wise ?

Mine was a 1989 4.2 diesal - no turbo, manual, 4 door

Very stable towing vehicle but It was slow on hills, however our Seaswirl Striper 2600 was about 3.5 tonnes all up.

I understand the turbos make a big difference

The td4.2 motors are legendary, as are the gear boxes too.
Later model ones don't like towing in 5th or overdrive for the autos.
Turbos make a big difference, and can be ticked up for a bit more grunt.
The 2.8s are not really a viable tow wagon for anything heavy or for long distance. They are a "converted" petrol engine.

If properly serviced, oils all changed as required, they keep going and going and going...

Mine is at 350k and still going strong, despite being tweaked up to over 150 kw.
you can't fix an idiot with duct tape, but it does muffle them for a while...

The 2.8 turbo was the predecessor to the maqin engine used by Nissan in Aus for a long time, I forget the model they released with it, but it was very much pushing on Toyotas toes.

My issue if the engine is good is how well the suspension has been treated, ie what was it used as.

With any pre 2000 vehicle they are a PITA as its 6 months WOFs and due to the age parts are frequently needing replacement.

Deseil engines from that era beit Isuzu whatever all suffer from leaking pump seals due to a change in fuel formula
Re doing seals also often means a partial or full recon.. The expensive part is the final bench testing before putting back in
Generally around the $1800 $2500 mark all up

If the seals have been done all good. If not they will start to leak on you.

That is basically my limit of knowledge on Deseil engines other than having to figure out how to bleed a pump if run out of fuel.. My oldvyamnar tractor that manuvors my boat in the back yard.
