Several years back DerekF & myself were fishing on the Kaipara with the surface of the water almost glasslike when Derek commented "what on earth is that" whilst pointing to a solitary wave about 75 cm high approaching us from about 300 mtrs or so. It eventually hit the stern of the boat without any undue drama apart from our bewilderment as to what may have caused it as there had not been any other boats or suchlike that could have done so.
We speculated that about the only likely cause could only have been due to some form of underwater seismic activity but at the same time reasoned "but we don't have earthquakes here in Auckland" however our speculation was proven correct upon a report stating that the seismic activity had indeed recorded in Auckland about that time.
It would appear that the activity had resulted in a mini tsunami which apparently can not only cause a wave swell on its' path towards land but can also subsequently suck the water back in the reverse direction & indeed on our trip back to the ramp ran aground due to inadequate depth of water resulting in our having to walk the boat a km or so.

Likewise yesterday after experiencing intermittent wave swells every few minutes or so for no apparent reason, similarly we found the water depth to be significantly less than we know it should normally be. We also came across a 100 mtr or so circle of what appeared to be floating pumice but on closer inspection prove to be clomps of styrene like foam but may have not had any connection whatsoever, then again it may well have.

It would seem according to recorded reports earthquakes are occurring at regular intervals thought NZ sometimes two or three times a day but admittedly relatively infrequently in the north it is far from unknown for them to occur.

It has only just occurred to me as an afterthought that when we went ashore at low tide to gather oysters that we commented that the strata of the exposed cliffs & the rock formations appeared to suggest they had resulted from some type of volcanic or seismic activity albeit if so, was no doubt thousands of years ago.

Has anyone else on the forum experienced anything similar?

PS the good news is that no matter what was occurring, the fishing was proving to be red hot.

Geonet have not reported any quakes Weak or stronger in the Auckland area, for the last 365 days. There have been quakes reported at NP and Whangarei though.

There is a story of a Maori village on the Taparoa Bank, Kaipara which was swept away in a storm (which may have been a tsunami).

That whole coast line was very volcanic - you can see a lot of larva tubes / pillows and stuff along the cliffs of Maori bay.

There were a lot of sea / volcano's that stretched right along the Westcoast heading North but I think the biggest Volcano sat just out off the entrance of the Kaipara - going along the banks of the inner Kaipara heads you can also see a lot of volcanic activity - larva bubbles etc...

All the black sand is from these ancient volcanoes in the Waitak's and Muriwai is full of pumice which wouldn't surprise me was coming from the floor of the Westcoast ocean?

It's a pretty cool place and love the history of the Kaipara....

Perhaps it is Trump's new steel wall along the Mexico border upsetting the balance of iron in the world????

There was a documentary last year about the volcano's and volcanic action around the Kaipara Harbour.
Barry was this Saturday or Friday that you experienced this phenomenon?
Cant say in the 15 years we've been up here that I have but very interested to find out more.

Was Friday about 8am that we experienced the waves lasting maybe 30 mins or so however the reduced water levels lasted on our daylight trip out ll as virtually all day & at that stage was dropping fast.  I had to go over the side at one point in order to "walk" the boat into slightly deeper water so came so close to
being stranded for maybe 4 hrs or more until the level of water was sufficient to re float.

Another unusual occurrence was at daybreak whilst we were waiting for the marker poles to become visible under a black sky & a deluge of heavy rain which as far as we can determine was confined to the immediate area we were in & apparently did not occur elsewhere.

Thinking back now there was one other similar occasion that Vinnie ( Bait catcher ) & I experience when the sky went completely black to the extent we opted to play safe by scurrying back to the ramp before the marker poles were no longer visible. We were marginally too late doing so as a deluge of rain began to fall causing us to miss one of the markers & head for another one that was barely visible so gunned the motor to head towards it only to run aground high & dry. In a short time the rain turned into a deluge almost like being anchored beneath Huka Falls requiring us to run the bilge pump every so often deal with the rising level in the boat. As the old saying states " when things go wrong don't be glum as you can be sure there will be worse to come" proved to be accurate as bolts of lightning began hitting the ground nearby. Not the most comforting of situations we can tell you ... sitting in a alloy boat with rods in the rocket launcher ... were undecided if it would be safer to remove them or not so left them there ... in midst of lightning with accompanying claps of thunder, standing in water on the floor of the boat.

We rang coastguard to inform them of the situation even if there was nothing they could do short of a helicopter rescue but fortunately the extreme weather abated as quickly as it begun & eventually the boat re floated allowing us to negotiate the markers to get back to the ramp before dark.

Bazza, you have obviously at some point in your life, upset "HUEY", the weather God.

Looks like whenever you go fishing now, a black cloud will appear overhead and you will be engulfed in torrential rain, with thunder and lightning. While everyone else will be in sunshine.

There is a way to appease Huey, but can't think of it at the moment.

Maybe someone else has a suggestion.

We were out on Friday at about that time and didn't notice anything unusual in our location (Southern Arm, down by the blinker).
Just a beautiful Kaipara day

Here's a video of our day - https://youtu.be/1a7ZchoxmaI

We launched into the Hoteo from Mungakura pre day break & heavy rain with dark skies occurred about then lasting 20 or 30 mins obscuring marker poles.
Thereafter it was relatively clear but were surprised to find the wind was more than forecast & water depth less than would normally be expected 2 1/2 hrs before low tide.

Once we anchored & fishing on the channel edge just prior to Oronga point the wind dropped away to the forecasted six knots making the intermittent wave swells all the more noticeable. They were not huge ... more like the wake from a mid size boat at speed but there were no boats anywhere close. The intermittent regular swells continued until we went ashore to gather oysters but were not evident after the tide change altho the low water depth effect continued.

Was at no time dramatic but from many years of fishing the area could not help but notice the unusual occurences & the only likely explanation we could think of was some form of seismic activity.

Smaller tides with a large bar giving increase swell affect inside the harbour maybe - lazy rollers?Coastguard had reported 10m standing waves at the entrance the night before and 4m on the bar itself while they assisted a yacht over the bar
All the same interesting, no rain for us down at Shelly Beach.

Happy fishing

Cheers

We launched at Shelley about tenish. Wasn't as much water as I expected. (High 14:11).
Ran out to South Head, smooth as. Once past heads water was the usual choppy confused sea, with a moderate SW swell coming in from the open sea. (Probably from wx system moving onto south island). We fished here and we fished there. Every time we started catching snapper we would have bronzies turn up to join in our fun and we would have to shift. Caught snapper, Mate got a nice one, and several large Kawhai most of which we released. Good try out for the boat, been sitting in the shed for a year. Got the bugs out of the auto anchor and it works good now. Shifted position about seven times. I recalibrated the Yamaha 6YC fuel guage over winter, but unfortunately on return from first outing it is still reading "full tank". Will have to get that sorted. Overall a very good day Smile.

We Launched from the Hoteo at around 2pm on Friday. Was a little bit rough in the afternoon.
Didnt notice anything suspicious. NO problems with catching snapper, however no gurnard on this occasion.

IMO  5 or 10 years ago most trips resulted in an assorted species of fish caught & consisted largely of the following :-

Snapper
gurnard
trevally
rays
KY
endless doggies
an occasional kingi
etc

However in recent years have noticed a dramatic reduction in the variety of species with a significant increase in the proportion of snapper, along with the sudden demise of scallops resulting in a total ban.

EG on Friday we caught our limit of snaps plus a solitary juvenile KY
& one off what behaved like a ray but broke off unsighted.

Have others noticed a similar pattern an if so any idea of a possible cause ?

I first started fishing Kaipara when we moved out past Kumeu. That would have been about 1984. Used to get large schools of Kahawai after sprats with birds working and snapper below. Haven't been out as much as I would like lately but doesn't seem to be as much activity. Friend goes out every couple of days and catches plenty of snapper.
Still plenty of rays around, never caught many trevs though. I haven't caught any Gurnard this summer but caught plenty last year.
Reading about the mullet factory on the Kaipara, They used to get schools of mullet one to 2 miles long

One thing I know for sure......You'll never have a dull day with Bazza.  Interesting and unexpected things keep happening around him.

I have often recalled that day Bazza. Hope all is well with you and Dorothy. Recently sailed right around the North Island in a traditional yacht ...."Steadfast" (copy of 1915 French Pilot Cutter...Jolie Brise). Magic experience.

Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience mate ... did you leave from Nelson & how long did it take to complete ?

Can't help but wonder why I never get invited to join in trips like that ... surely it is not because of my reputation for mishaps !!

In my opinion, Ive been fishing the central Kaipara Harbour (have always launched from the Hoteo), that we are not getting as many doggies these days, but the snapper fishery has actually improved in the size of fish. Most other things have stayed about the same, including scallops(but thats another story).
So yeah, what you are noticing is pretty much the same as me.
The massive schools of mullet can be seen at certain times of the year in the river systems, bathing on the surface of the water.
We did see a small boil up as we were coming in last Friday, just off the Island, but not as common as what they used to be.

Now that you mention it Harmul we saw bjrds working as well which in my experience is a relatively rare occurrence on the Kaipara.

Further more did not recognise the breed other than they looked to be some sort of migratory tern & may well have been wading birds as were feeding solely on the surface with only their beaks touching the surface.
