My latest video out catching Snapper on the west coast, also caught an interesting looking rock cod type fish that I have never seen before, can anyone ID this for me?

Hiwihiwi or kelpfish (Chironemus marmoratus). Very common in the reefy surf zone on the east coast. Marblefish look similar but are completely unrelated. Marblefish eat seaweed while kelpfish eat meat. Kelpfish are a frequent and annoying catch off the rocks that nearly always swallow the hook right down.

You can catch billions or even trillions of them surfcasting in places like Hamitons Gap Coxie.
Best gurnard fisherman in my street

I caught one of those once, while I was on a fishing charter in the Gulf.  As no one else had caught anything all day I was quite pleased, but from the speed with which the skipper took it off the hook and tossed it back over the side I gather they don't make good eating.

go to the gap n sometimes thats the only thing you can catch , you dont even know they have eaten a 7 or 8 hook, ive seen some guys taking a bucket full home, you need a axe n chainsaw to fillet them,
