I need to setup two rods and reels for the above.

They are on a VERY modest budget, Im thinking sub $200 reels.

Im use to livebaiting and straylining with an open drag and tighten it on the way up to strike, but Im not sure they will be.

But I cant think of any baitunners that are fast enough for jigging.

Also rods, probably around $100, I know, not a lot of money.

Im thinking probably 7ft with a bit of flick for poppers. Low down grunt.

Any ideas on something budget that will fit this couples first set up. Like a lot of people, they sunk a lot of money into the boat but forgot thats just the start of it. Still, something not too trashy would be nice. But I think $150 is as cheap as your going to find for a stickbait rod.

Would it be better to advise them to buy a baitrunner reel and a stick bait reel?

To me the only all in one reel close to it is a drum reel, daiwa sealine blue SL reels

The Penn SSV 9000 or 10500 would be an absolute beast of a reel for jigging/popping/livebaiting at around $240, Likewise the Fin Nor Offshore 8500 or 9500. If that is a bit pricey, the Penn SSM 8500/9500 would get the job done and comes in around $140.

I thought they discontinued the SSV, or no, they upgraded it?

The first reel that spun into my mind (lol) was the fin nor offshore.

But it means Im going to have to teach them how to let a fish run with their strayline bait and or live bait with a conventional drag system, then tighten the drag before pulling up tight. Personally as an 8yo this was second nature to me. But the amount of people telling me Im going to snap my 80lb Braid these days amuses me. And its not like people dont tighten their drag on a baitrunner afterward to REALLY turn a fishes head.

Any thoughts on that?

Yes baitrunners and TLDs are ultra handy, but I dont think they have ever been required?

Maybe we were just poor in the 70s and thats how we did it and Ive never stopped, although I personally own TLDs now for trolling and livebaiting, but that was a matter of liking the reel before the lever drag. Baitrunners, owned one, lasted me 3 years, possibly partly my fault as i was very much into rock hopping with solid glass rods and expected my gear to be tough to handle a beating.

Anyway, do they need a baitrunner to let the fish run and do they need a baitrunner/tld for livebaiting?

For general fishing for a feed..
everything except jigging.. which I dont have expence enough to comment on.
 A base rod, 10 to 15 kg with a 6000OC bait runner.
We set , off the end of the rod about 1.5kg.. may beed to up the main drag 1/4 turn most for a high 50cm snap.. bit more for a good king.
We use suicide re curve hooks.. runner set for lively/ general strayline ledger just enough not to drag way out into the either  in the holder.. fish takes swims away to have a munch 10/20m  turn handle load up sink the hook.
Trolling , swap trace for lure on the clip end of the braid.. bimini and cats pawed.. again main drag/ runner set5 as above.
xtreme a good all rounder rod, or the nano matrix, bit more expensive.
Personally , dont think from the little I know  not suitable for jigging thu.

If just setting up gear, general fishing for a feed.. 2nd rod would go for light gear.. 4000OC on a nano matrix 6 to 10 kg.
Good for stray lining , sb/ lure fishing in under 25m.. the 6000 over 20m

If on budget.. diawa j8 30lb coloured braid on both.

Im thinking as a couple, maybe they should have 2 general sets which a fin nor 80 and stick bait rod would fill and one light bait rod/reel, maybe a small TLD/15 or as you say a 6000 BTR.

I dont think its feasible what they have asked me.

Yes I fish only mustad demons now myself, ive RARELY had one go to gut, not to say I havnt had a 12cm snapper get a 9/0 in its mouth ROFL, felt terrible for the wee thing.

I think they are really interested in both jigging for Kingis, trolling live baits and straylining for snapper. I think the 2 Fin Nor 80 reels could actually be fine.

What is a good rod that has that whippy action at the end for jigging stick baits and casting poppers but also has low down hurt to turn a fish? around $150. If it exists....

X2. I've got both the SSV 9500 and 10500. To date they have accounted for Kings up to 30kg and are really well priced. Picked up mine from Smart Marine for under $200 each.
Matched with Penn and Fin Nor rods which I picked up new on TM for under a hundy each.

I use the smaller ssv 850 & 750's. Pauls Kitefishing Shop doe's them for $199 same for bigger models. If you could get them with a Penn Rodd Combo, would be a good Starter. Great reels on the big Snaps! plus have tested them out on some serious Sharks but we don't have the big Kingi's  down this way... Cheers

if anything Geoff the SSVs are more inclined to be better at the jigging metal as speed is their pedigree.

ive passed on peoples thoughts, will await what they end up going for.

an SSV light enough for a days jigging, with a baitrunner function to give it some straylining and or live baiting qualities would be an interesting real. I just wonder how tough it would turn out.

It's a little bit pointless because nobody is going to jig (meaningfully) with a rod that works well for straylining, or casting surface lures for that matter.

I would pick up one of the larger Okuma Azores from Fullonfishing that they are clearing out for about $150, match it with the new Okuma Tournament Concept spin jig rod, spool it with 50 or 65lb braid, that will cover them for livebaiting and jigging. Then get a Baitrunner 8000OC (or stretch a little for the D series) and a 7-8ft rod that can throw a lure OK and will do for straylining.

But if they want both rods to be able to do all 4 things all they're going to end up with is a couple of combos that are **** at everything. Jigging especially is the land of specialist gear.

EDIT: I wouldn't jig with any of the baitrunners on the market. They do not have the grunt or drag for trying to turn a decent size king close to the reef. A Baitrunner 8000D tops out at about 6.5kg of usable drag, which a reasonable Kingfish will absolutely laugh at.

Ha other way round ie the SSV with a baitrunner 25kg main drag. And I dont think its people wouldnt want to spend less money, its more companies dont like that idea, u know, loss of profit.

regardless, doesnt exist and thats what ive told them.
