With the "kingie season" starting to wind down here in Welly, I am currently looking at new reel options for next season - it will most likely be paired with a Jig Star Twisted Sista Pe 2-5.

Interested in what everyone else is using and why.  Please share your thoughts.

Cheers,

JT

Hi JT, for mechanical jigging we mainly use Jigging Master reels.
On that rod id go for either a PE3 (light and can jig with all day).
Or a PE5N (narrow).
Both reels have stopped some big kings for us and perform very well.
Im sure you will get lots of other opinions.
Gav.

I recently converted to spin and was kinda like screw it do this once do it right, bought an Okuma Makaira 20000. Still trying to get a rhythm going with the combination of lower reel plus quite a long handle arm, its awkward as coming from overhead. Not that any of this helps you much.

I would have a look at any of the Maxel reels in a suitable size - somewhere between the F30 and F50 will likely be spot on, or the new Rage series when they arrive quite soon.

Other reels to consider are obviously the JM reels, PE5N probably a good match, although the noisy sprung-dog anti-reverse may or may not bother you; Shimano Talica 12 or Ocea Jigger (probably a 4000) or even a Trinidad 16NA, Okuma Andros 12N-II (A series only), Penn Torque 25N Lever Drag. I'm sure there's others but they aren't springing to mind right now.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I've done a little bit of digging based on your recommendations and sought to compare those reels with a couple parameters for the selection - available in NZ and max drag equal to or greater than 15 kg.

At this stage the Maxel F30CH is a front runner for me but I must admit that the F30CH spool capacity is a bit on the light side.

have tried plenty of others but the above have always been reliable and bullet proof...they might be a little heavy compared to some but they are a dedicated jigging reel.......wont be changing to anything else.

Thanks LBD, great to have a star drag in there.  I updated the table to include the 4000P.  Not sure why the formatting has gone out the window though DisapproveConfused

Looks like the JM's come out way ahead on drag,  which converted into actual fight drag means, means super smooth drag for those big Kings,, just saying.  Wink

Do the maxel make all that whirring noise like the jm? .....i hated that.
I like the jiggers with cals plate and the smooth drag carbontex drag washers.......bloody smooth drag(20kg drag with washers for 4000/5000)......i used it nicely for live baiting as well.....
owned two jm reels and didnt like either of em.....had probs with my pe6.....plus they were never lucky for me.......strange how that works lol.......the pe6 was very good at catching red snapper for some reason ! and my ocea jigger 5000P/jigstar 450(original/mark one) was my lucky set up....caught some great fish on that set up.....the action on that rod is sweet too.

PM Kaveman about a Poseidon 200 -300 reel 20kg drag, tough, smooth as... Have been using them for sometime. I'm a rough bugger & they still going hard. Use 30lb Elite Tas on the 200 & 50 - 90 on other 2 I have.... 500r & 400r... 500 has been to the Kings & Ranfurly's dealt to Kingi's easy & 65kg Bass, I suffered though  LOL

No they don't.  All Transformer reels have silent AR pawls so for anglers who dislike the noise, here is an upgrade path.  Maxel reels are supported in NZ by BCS Enterprises with original parts and great service.
LBD, OJ4000/5000 were great reels and still are.  They are at least 14 yrs old and since been discontinued.  Consider modernising LBD, the new Rage reels are epic! Clap
