Hi bite,

I saw these yesterday in about 400m behind aldies. I thought they were a mix of pilot whales and large bottlenose dolphins.

Lots of sooty shearwaters and molymawks with them but not a single gannet.

Like you we didn't even get an albie but was a nice day out. Saw a devil Ray (think not a manta) in 150m just north of aldies on way in.

Out from whangamata to mayor worked the SW corner large flocks of gannets and a few dolphins. Nice blue water. Got 4 alerts from 3 to 6 kgs. Had been eating tiny squid and anchovies.

Last year those Bottlenose dolphins and False Killer Whales were hammering the bluenose out on the Mayor Knolls. We saw them in action, big patch of bluenose on the sounder first drop instant double hookup, then these buggers turn up and the school of bluenose scatters and not a single bite after that. Heaps of Mollymawks and Mutton ducks with them, when they surfaced the birds would go crazy around them so obviously they had caught fish.

Spoke to the guy doing the documentary on the false killer whales and he said that the False Killer Whales and Bottlenose Dolphins often travel together and sometimes with pilot whales as well. He said they will find a rock holding bluenose especially around spawning and hammer it, go away for a few days to let them settle down and then come back again and again.

It's that time of the year when the false killers come closer to shore to feed on any large fish. They will eat anything from kahawai to blue nose, hapuka, big tuna and marlin. There's only about 200 of them that come into near-shore waters between the Three Knights and East Cape.

If any of you guys see them out there, PLEASE give me a call on 0800 FAR OUT (0800 327 688) or post here or on our Facebbok page: https://www.facebook.com/FalseKillerWhalesNZ/.

Thanks for your support!
