If recreational fishers were in need of an excuse to get out on the water they can now rest assured their hobby is adding millions to the economy, a new report says.

A study commissioned by the New Zealand Marine Research Foundation has found recreational fishing is creating $1.7 billion in economic activity around the country each year and supporting more 8000 jobs.

In fuel tax and GST alone, the hobby was putting $200 million into the government coffers each year, foundation chair Jeff Romeril said.

"Of that income the costs of managing non-commercial fisheries is estimated at less than $15 million per year, so the value we add to the economy is plain to see," he said.

"Prior to this report, the value of the recreational fishing industry to the economy was largely unknown."

As seen on News hub.

Surprised there hasent been much comment or relevance given to this report from the public, recreational, or the Government.
The findings are significant.

correct cirrus,
from the little i have heard around the net the Comm's are head down jackse up trying really hard to pick holes in it, because if they dont they could loose out big time,
if they ever do loose out which is likely to take 5years or so to reduce their take,
things like Broadbill and Kingfish should be done straight off
just these two Tourism could add another 100 million in just 2 years as proof of what can be achieved,
we certainly have a world class Broadbill industry with some great sized fish,
with daylight fishing this has made it more enjoyable,
Kingfish have always been world beaters yet comm's still have a quota to cover by catch, bad new as its way to large when they can threaten us with i can wipe the kings out around here if you like. just because they can, needs fixing.
