Spring is good season for spin fishing.
I took a customer of mine to Rangitaiki and Mohoka river systems for a couple days.
Rainbow trout fishing in both of the rivers seems to be very good this year.
Fly fishing worked well in most of the spots, but when I fished in big, deep and wind spots with strong currents. Serious spin fishing using minow type lures beat fly fishing.
However, brown trout fishing was very slow.
I managed to hook up some brownies, but they were so lazy and skinny, and didn't fight hard well.
Some still say, fly fishing is the most effective way to catch trout, but recent type spin fishing using thin braid, such as Varivas PE1, fluorocarbon leaders and minow type lures can cover lot more spots faster, as a result i cannot find too much difference in terms of the number of fish we catch on both methods. Especially in big rivers where there are lots of spots you cannot target with fly fishing, spin fishing has big advantages.
After January, fly fishing get really good cos trout start to focus more on surface activities, but until then spin fishing can beat flies.
