Hi Shelly, you can be guided somewhat by price, like most things you get what you pay for. Also depends on which Coast hubby will be fishing. 12 - 14 foot is usually about right. Killwell make some good surf casters at good prices, there is better more expensive stuff to but might give you a starting point for the rod. There are even more reels to choose from & same thing applies about price. You will notice the dedicated surf caster reels have bigger spools giving more line capacity & greater casting distance. With reels stick to the brand names they all do them & you get good backup & warranties.hope this helps.

Hi Pete,

Thanks heaps for your reply.
Just wondering about the reel side of things. How do I tell what ones have bigger spools?
Do you recommend some reel brands/makes?
We are in the Manawatu/Rangitiki area.....don't know much about the areas really eg where to go, good posies etc but he wants to get back into doin what he enjoys.

What sort of budget have you got Shelly? That will help with brands and recommendation.

Quality brands include Shimano, Penn, Daiwa, Fin Nor and the high end Okuma or Ticas.  Decent quality surf casting reels start at around $150. Such a reel should last many trips and handle all but the hardest fighting fish.

Hey Shelly I'm not familiar with your area but may be an idea to have a chat with your local tackle store/s they should show you a range of reels & talk you through what, why & how much. Don't feel like you have to buy the first thing you see or the first thing they recommend. Also ask kinda specifically what they have on special/discounted. I have seen same product seriously reduced in one shop but full retail in next. Good luck with ur search hope hubby likes his pressy,

Or go and talk to Bruce from Hunting and Fishing, as people have said you get what you pay for, I now fish from a boat but use to have a 14ft Kilwell with a Penn reel and I usually fished out from Turakina down to Foxton river mouth, or talk to Philip at Turners in Feilding he is a surfcasting expert, and has caught some big snapper out from Santoft forest
