I am new to jigging and want to invest in some good gear
when buying second hand how can you ensure that the gear is in good condition
Any ideas or suggestions?
Is it worth paying for a shop to open up the reel to  inspect?

Hi Tommo I guess you could do that, usually the external condition and the smoothness of the reel and the drag will tell you if it has serious issues. If the reel isnt knocked around an d smooth then it's probably ok.

I would still take it in for a service. peice of mind then for you. if you were real nervous about it you could have them change the bearings and drag washers. Youve almost got a new reel then!!

Hey tommo i sent a reel to swordfish steve see his section on reels the drag blew out ,all done going good now $45 or something so fairly sweet deal but if bearings needed would be more me thinks

it can be a gamble going second hand but also there some good deals on here regards jig reels/rods just got to be quick the wekas in fast ,,,,without a doubt send it in for check over at least you know then what condition it in ,,as im a tight money bags id rather buy a second hand minter than pay new price ,trouble is with jig gear as the cost can be way over the top and it dont have to be ,,,i just have one size rod js350 (got a couple ) i then got a diawa saltist30t reel and find it a powerful setup which meets my demands and it didnt cost the earth

depends on the shop, and work done cheap end $30 for the service $60 upper . parts well ....... can be a bit but worth while

I'm new to jigging and realised my snapper rod & reel was just not going to cut it so I bought a new rod & reel for Xmas. My reel is an Avet SX 5.3:1 from Swordfishsteve ($395 is the cheaper end of the market for reeels that can handle jigging), and I bought a Jigstar 250 rod (same as selling above) from the local Hunting & Fishing store for $399. That's $800 so the $700 deal looks good! I saw it after I bought mine but being a lefty fisher I needed the special reel anyway and swordfishsteve came up with the best deal.
 
I had jigs already (but lost one to a kingy hence why I bought new rod & reel) and get them from maddogfishing on TradeMe for much cheaper than the retail shops.
